A class is responsible for processing claims and taking payments for the Employees'Unemployment Insurance benefits to ensure that eligible claimants receive their benefits on a timely basis.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core tasks common to all positions in the class series and not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in this class. Since class specifications are descriptive and non-restrictive, incumbents can perform similar kinds of jobs not specifically listed here.

  • Makes claims for unemployment insurance benefits by questioning claimants regarding their employment history.

  • Conducts fact finding interviews with claimants to determine whether non-separation eligibility requirements have been met.

  • Identifies the appropriate state and federal unemployment insurance program, such as federal, state, or local, to establish a claim based on previous employer's employees', and current, employment and claim dates.

  • Verifies accuracy of wage and employer information with claimant, may request additional information if claimant indicates wages and/or employers are omitted or inaccurate. Request evidence of earnings such as W-2's or W-3's.

  • Informs the claimant of maximum and weekly benefit amount, basis for computation of benefits, length of claim, minimum allowable earnings and rights and responsibilities while receiving benefits. Describe the procedures for obtaining benefit checks; issues pay orders; provides informational materials.

  • Reviews pay orders completed by claimants receiving benefits on a continuous basis for completeness and reported earnings during benefit week. Records in the Master File of Benefits Week contain such items as date, Pay Order Number and deductions from the weekly benefit amount.

  • Refers claims for eligibility determination to claims deputies.

  • Enters data into a computer terminal, verifies claims and provides benefit information.

  • Completes and processes forms to stop payment on lost checks, correct computerized claimant information, and recover overpayment of benefits due to revised benefit amount, unreported wages or duplicate checks issued.

  • Answers to questions from claimants, employers and social service agencies regarding benefit filing procedures, claim status, lost or late check appeals and rights.

  • Sorts and files forms, cards, and other items of a similar nature; tests for errors, omissions, or proper coding.

  • Maintains daily and weekly records, or number of claims taken and processed.

  • May receive out-of-state local office claims through the electronic mail system, review printouts for accuracy of data, correct errors and/or omissions.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • 6 months of customer service experience in such areas as providing prompt, accurate and courteous services to customers seeking information. answering requests quickly by phone or online, ensuring customers are satisfied with the service and responding to complaints.

  • 6 months experience in document processing, which includes reviewing and evaluating records for completeness or conformity with laws, rules, regulations, standards; policy and procedures to resolve deficiencies; interpret information; track and monitor activities.

  • Six months experience in applying laws, rules, and regulations. Standards, procedures, and practices.

  • 6 months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
