The Bethel trial court of the Alaska Court System seeks a dependable individual to become an in-house clerk for judges and perform case management duties. This position will be paid a salary of $12k per year.

The Position
Inside the courtroom, you will prepare for daily proceedings, perform microphone test to ensure recording equipment is operating properly, ensure all supplies/equipment are available for the clerk, judge, and parties, and prepare the jury deliberation room if necessary.

You will announce the entry of judicial officers, record court proceedings, create an accurate summary and log proceedings to accurately reflect the outcome of hearings such as bail conditions, future court dates, and other orders. You will be responsible for preparing, distributing, and processing court documents in a timely manner, properly marking and maintaining recordings, exhibits and exhibit lists, and securing the computer, exhibits, and courtroom at the end of the hearings.

Outside of the courtroom, you will properly process files and paperwork when hearings are complete, follow up with distribution in a timely fashion, update new information in CourtView, prepare files for future court hearings, and route files to appropriate case manager for further processing. This position will also initiate criminal cases, assemble and prepare files for arraignments, docket and file criminal filings, and route to chambers or judicial officer when appropriate. You will assist customers with court related questions, either by telephone or in person, and serve as back-up to the front counter as need.

This position may travel to assist judicial officers in conducting trials in the Bethel area and may work extended hours, weekends, and holidays to accommodate the court calendar.

The Work Hours
Full-time court employees are currently scheduled to work 37.5 hours per week. The work hours for this position are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or completion of a general education development certificate and one year of office clerking experience, and the ability to type at least 40 words per minute (net).


Substitution:

On a month-by-month basis, additional office clerical work experience will substitute for the high school diploma or GED certification.


Completion of 36 semester credit hours or 48 quarter credit hours of coursework from an accredited college will substitute for the year of required office clerical experience.


Completion of an appropriate vocational training course of study such as legal secretary, paralegal, or office skills will substitute for the required office clerical experience on a month-for-month basis.
