Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.

The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Communications Consultant 5 to work on the team to make WSDOT Olympic Region a credible, reliable source of timely information related to projects and state highway operations in our seven counties of responsibility. The Communications Consultant 5 will assist the communications manager in setting workload for all communications consultants in the region, completing scopes of work for construction projects, supervising the communications consultants responsible for maintenance, and preparing tribal relations and legislative reports. This position identifies, develops, and implements strategic communications for major I-5 construction projects in Pierce and Thurston counties. They will plan, create, coordinate, and control media and public outreach campaigns as well as strategically respond to media inquiries with minimal supervision. At times, this position must carry and on- call phone and serve as agency spokesperson. This position contributes directly to WSDOT’s successful delivery of the Olympic Region programs, maintaining public confidence and helping the public travel safely.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Communications Consultant 5 will:

  • Transform policy and program goals into strategy, communications plan. Key messages; develop communication plans for construction projects, fish passage barrier removal, planning, predesign and maintenance issues as they arise.
  • Create blogs, videos, webpage content, folios, briefing papers, newsletters, and brochures for media/stakeholders.
  • Craft short and long term plans to meet communication and public involvement needs. '
  • Prepare required legislative reports and folios.
  • Review design, communication, and technical requirements for building projects in the Olympic region.
  • Supervise, train and manage lower class communications consultants.
  • Many planned and unplanned shutdowns of information systems for maintenance, operations, and construction.

This role requires occasional night and weekend hours when needed, and serves as part of an on-call rotation for one week at a time up to 12 times a year. This on call rotation will include one or more holidays.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • A bachelor's degree involving major studies in journalism, communications, or public relations is a closely related field.
  • Four (4) years of professional experience in information, journalism, or public relations.
    NOTE: Additional professional experience in information, journalism, or public relations will be substituted, year for year, for education.

  • Three (3) years of experience reviewing and modifying social media content, media communications, videography and written materials, including press releases, project webpages and communication plans.

  • How can I speak more confidently and confidently during a live interview?
  • Ability to understand complex technical transportation issues and translate them into clear, understandable information that casts an organization in a positive light and is consistent with organizational strategy messages. '

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Public speaking, graphic arts and printing methods and materials, and background. "
  • Ability to use a variety of software, including Drupal. Ability to utilize still camera and video camera for WSDOT messages and goals.
  • Public Relations, public involvement, marketing, consumer service, transportation systems, construction, media relations and community relations (including working with historically excluded communities).
  • background in and thorough understanding of high-risk/high-stress communications, media relations and politics.
  • WSDOT's knowledge of the Olympic region and transportation system.
