Purpose of Position
The purpose of the Assistant Director of Accessibility for Students is to support the missions of the department. This position consults with students, faculty and staff, using a case-by-case, interactive process to identify, coordinate, monitor and evaluate reasonable accommodations based on disability and other student services functions. This is a highly specialized and skilled position that requires expertise in student development, Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This position makes independent decisions on a daily basis to ensure access to the educational opportunities provided to students at the University of North Dakota.
Other duties include assisting students with special circumstance situations, perform judicial affairs responsibilities as outlined by the Code of Student Life, provide care and support for students in need, student policy development, general consultation with faculty, staff and students, and other duties as assigned. And will serve on the Care Team and respond to crisis and emergency situations according to established policies.
This position works closely with and provides support to the Director and in working with the senior leadership team of the Division of Student Affairs, including the academic deans and other campus partners, to execute accessibility for students.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and direction for disability access for students.
- Manage and supervise the application process for students seeking accessibility accommodations.
- Supervises one full-time professional staff member, the Administrative Secretary who is responsible for processing accessibility applications.
- Supervises one full-time Accommodation Support and Student Services Specialist who is responsible for ensuring accommodations are delivered to students including accessible textbooks and notetaking services.
- Independently determine eligibility for services by collecting and reviewing documentation of disability and interviewing students.
- Make independent judgement regarding accommodations, accessibility, or disability related concerns.
- Consult with the ADA Coordinator, General Counsel’s Office, and others as appropriate.
- Solid foundational knowledge and ability to apply various laws including the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
- Student support and care response.
- Serve as a Deputy Title IX Coordinator for the university.
- Provide assistance, advocacy and consultation to faculty, staff, students and others (care team reports).
- Refer faculty, staff, students and others to other University resources as appropriate.
- Appropriately document issues, responses and referrals.
- Advise students on all aspects of the Special Circumstance Late Drop/Withdrawal process.
- Coordinates appropriate response to critical incidents and emergencies involving students that are brought forward by faculty, staff and students.
- Conducts parental notification in response to critical incidents as needed and appropriate.
- Perform judicial affairs responsibilities.
- Serves as a conduct officer in the investigation, support and adjudication of potential violations of the Code of Student Life.
- Advises faculty members, administrators and other members of the community on how to address issues concerning disruptive or disturbing student behaviors.
- Maintain current knowledge of federal and university policies and procedures related to student judicial affairs.
- Assists in the annual preparation of crime information and data for compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and the SaVE Act.
- Provide leadership, training, and support to staff members in the department, division, and across campus.
Required Competencies
- A strong understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
- Demonstrated experience working with highly complex and sensitive student issues.
- Knowledge and experience in crisis intervention.
- Knowledge and experience in campus judicial work.
- A strong understanding in the requirements of (FERPA) Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, the CLERY ACT, as well as recent Title IX policy revisions.
- Demonstrated problem-solving and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex administrative processes effectively and efficiently.
- Demonstrated leadership in comprehensive project management.
- Ability to work collaboratively across all institutional lines and diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated understanding of issues facing diverse student populations in higher education.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze data, identify trends, and make informed decisions.
Minimum Requirements
- Master’s Degree in Higher Education or related field.
- 3 years’ experience in higher education student disability services.
- 3 year experience with private and sensitive student data including testing records and/or diagnostic records.
- 1 year supervisory experience
- A/504 Coordinator Certification through ATXIA or ability to receive certification within 1 year of hire.
- Successful completion of a Standard Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
- 5 years of workings with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Clery Act, Title IX, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- 5 years of experience in campus disability services work.
- 2 Experience with Starfish, student conduct software (Maxient), student disability accommodations software, PeopleSoft, Blackboard, or other higher education related software.
- 3 years professional supervisory experience
