Position Overview
The Statewide Volunteer Coordinator will work daily with the Volunteer Coordinators, Internship Coordinators, Chaplains, and the Assistant Warden of Programs at all IDOC facilities across the State of Illinois. Provides annual training for all Volunteer Coordinators and Internship Coordinators. Provides interpretation of IDOC rules and objectives concerning volunteers. Works with outside agencies to ensures programming when requested. Plans, coordinates, and produces annual “Volunteer of the Year” program for the agency. Compiles monthly and yearly records, submitted by each facility, of volunteer service hours for internal and external reporting. Serves as the liaison with the office of Chief Chaplain assisting them with volunteer needs. We encourage all qualified individuals to apply.
Job Responsibilities
- Organizes, plans, executes, controls, and evaluates the operation of the statewide Volunteer Service Program.
- Serves as liaison with assigned facility volunteer coordinators to resolve all volunteer related problems experienced at the facility.
- Plans for and recruits volunteers to perform various individual in custody program services with the Correctional facilities including reading, arts, religious, and mentoring programs.
- Implements studies in order to properly plan and organize programs for the individual in custody population and to continue to offer programs that will assist in the lowering of the recidivism rate.
- Serves as liaison to the Chief Chaplain’s Office.
- Serves as the coordinator for IDOC internships.
- Plans, coordinates, and produces annual volunteer recognition program and banquet.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of those duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college preferably with courses in business or public administration..
- Requires two (2) years of responsible administrative experience in a public or business organization.
Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)
- Prefers at least three (3) years professional experience responding to inquiries from management and the public.
- Prefers at least three (3) years professional experience in policy and procedures related to implementing large scale initiatives.
- Prefers at least three (3) years professional experience in training and supervision of programs related to volunteers and/or internships.
- Prefers at least two (2) years professional experience gathering information and preparing monthly/yearly reports.
- Prefers at least two (2) years professional experience in coordinating with multiple departments to achieve a common goal.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois. Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department’s zero tolerance Drug Testing policy. The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
- Requires ability to travel occasionally to IDOC facilities to provide training to volunteers, review volunteer program delivery, and coordinate with the facility internship program; overnight stays may be required.
