Job Description



The Services Specialist will utilize child welfare practice skills to ensure children are protected from abuse and neglect. When child abuse or neglect is indicated, specialists work closely with families and the legal system toward a goal of reunification, independent living, or other permanent living situation.

Please include any experience you have with coaching, any experience identifying and securing placement for youth in care, and any experience working with Continuous Quality Improvement and data analyst work:

    What are the benefits of incorporating proactive strategies for placement of children into everyday practice? How would you manage a high level of information being received daily from multiple counties with placement requests?

Required Education and Experience

Education
Possession of a bachelor’s or master’s degree with a major in one of the following human services areas: social work, sociology, psychology, forensic psychology, education, community development, law enforcement, behavioral science, gerontology, special education, education of the emotionally disturbed, education of the gifted, family ecology, community services, family studies, family and/or child development, counseling psychology, criminal justice, human services, a human services-related counseling major, or interdisciplinary studies in social science.
OR
Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major with at least 30 semester (45 term) credits in one or a combination of the following human services areas: social work, sociology, psychology, forensic psychology, education, community development, law enforcement, behavioral science, gerontology, special education, education of the emotionally disturbed, education of the gifted, family ecology, community services, family studies, family and/or child development, counseling psychology, criminal justice, human services, a human services-related counseling major, or interdisciplinary studies in social science.
Experience
Services Specialist 12
Three years of professional experience providing social casework services to socially and economically disadvantaged individuals equivalent to a Services Specialist, including one year equivalent to a Services Specialist P11.

Additional Requirements and Information

This position will work remotely. This position is a BSC2 position and will be located in proximity to the candidate selected. Occasional travel to the office located at BSC 2 may be required. Selected candidates who have been approved to work remotely must complete that work within Michigan. Candidates should confirm work location and schedule at the time of interview.

The BSC2 Region contains the following counties: Arenac, Bay, Clare, Isabella, Gladwin, Midland, Gratiot, Shiawassee, Saginaw, Huron, Tuscola, Lapeer, Sanilac, St. Clair, Clinton, Eaton, Ingham and Genesee counties.

What makes this position unique?
This position is a lead worker that will be essential to the placement of children in BSC 2. This is a new position developed with the purpose of ensuring timely, safe and suitable placements for youth without an identified placement. This position will be responsible for daily communication with counties and the BSC, compilation of data and reports, coordination with local counties and private agencies, as well as retention of data regarding requests made. The person must have an attention to detail. The position will be remote and will not require the selected candidate to travel to sites as the work can be managed remotely. The position will require a great deal of coordination and maintaining of information. Therefore, the candidate shall have technical skills that include use of excel, databases, MiSACWIS history and a basic understanding of foster care and licensing programs.

What does Limited Term in this position mean to me?
Limited Term is an appointment which has an expiration date. For this position the Limited Term assignment will begin on the date of hire and expire one year from the date of hire unless extenuating circumstances require the position be ended earlier than 12 months. At the end of the 12-month period the BSC will have the option of requesting an extension for another year, up to 4 years in total. If the individual in this position remains in the position for 4 full years, the position will expire at that time and the individual would be moved into their former position. If you are candidate hired from an outside agency, the limited term language outlined above would still apply; however, when the appointment expires, you would be required to apply to a separate, vacant, full-time position to continue your employment with the State of Michigan.


As a Condition of Employment –
this position requires a valid driver's license and successful completion of a background investigation including fingerprinting and a criminal records check.
Upon hire, the successful candidate will be required to complete a nine week pre-service training program that includes a total of 270 hours of competency-based classroom and field training. Additionally, the employee must successfully complete a minimum number of hours of in-service training on an annual basis.
