Special Information:


2 positions are available in eastern Montana. One position will be based in Regions 5 & 6 (Billings & Glasgow), and the other position in Region 7 (Miles City). Duty stations may be based in any regional office within the area of responsibility. While most field work will be in the assigned region(s), technicians will sometimes lead multi-region survey efforts and will need to travel to other regions. Work is primarily field based, most office time will be during the winter. Technician must have the flexibility to be away from home for a majority of the spring & summer field seasons. Work will occasionally require a change and reorganization of work schedules and travel plans due to weather or other circumstances. This position is currently in modified funding. Thus, while FWP anticipates continued funding for this position, permanent status is not guaranteed beyond June 30, 2025.

Job Duties:

Technician will work in the Nongame Wildlife Program and will be supervised by the Regional Nongame Wildlife Biologist(s). The focus of the position is to lead survey and inventory efforts on Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) as directed by the priorities identified by staff biologists and the nongame bureau chief. Survey efforts will be diverse and may include work on birds, bats, mammals, reptiles & amphibians. Previous experience surveying for wildlife is required and ideally includes multiple taxa and diverse survey methods (e.g. capture & handling, bird point counts, radio telemetry, camera trapping). While technical skills required for the position are similar, the ideal skill sets will vary by region. Most field work will occur in the assigned region(s) but technicians will sometimes lead or participate in multi-region projects and survey efforts.

Basic knowledge and understanding of biology, animal ecology, anatomy, and population dynamics is required. Good organizational and time management skills are needed as well as the ability to accurately collect and record data. Technician will be responsible for data entry and database management. Knowledge of computer applications such as word processing, Excel, and database management applications are required. Experience with mapping programs and working in ArcPro, AGOL, and/or Survey 123 is preferred. Technicians will be involved with survey design, data analysis, and end-of-season reports for nongame wildlife biologists and for inclusion in the annual nongame report. Communication skills, both written and verbal, are required.

The ability to work without supervision in potentially hazardous conditions is expected. The technician will perform a variety of work including moving heavy objects, backpacking, stream crossing, high elevation hiking, working in bear country, winter conditions, working at night, and camping for extended periods. The technician must have adequate field skills and be able to use binoculars, spotting scopes, GPS units, and in the field mapping programs, drive a 4x4 vehicle in all weather conditions, change a tire, hike alone or in a team, work safely in backcountry situations and in grizzly bear country, set up and maintain a clean camp, administer basic first aid, and interact with the public. The technician must be able to drive safely for long periods at a time.

The technician will need to be able to communicate effectively with landowners and other public in the field when questions about the work arise.

Technician may train and supervise interns hired by nongame staff. Supervision could include scheduling intern's time, training on survey methodology, supervising interns during surveys, and monitoring data collection/report writing by interns.


Minimum Qualifications:

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, fish and wildlife management, animal ecology, biology, or a closely related field and some related work experience. Combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
