The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is responsible for managing and protecting the state’s renewable natural resources, including all wildlife and aquatic life.

The Office of the Secretary exists to provide leadership and support services, administrative direction, and accountability for departmental programs; administrative direction and leadership to ensure the success of subordinate programs; and department-wide coordination, communication, personnel and basic resources needed to accomplish the department’s mission.

VACANCY INFORMATION:

THIS VACANCY IS LIMITED TO CURRENT PERMANENT STATUS CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE AND FISHERIES, OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY ONLY.

This position is located in Region 5C.

This position is the first line supervisor for sworn enforcement personnel assigned to a statewide specialized enforcement work unit. The Lieutenant supervises and assists sworn personnel engaged in the investigation and enforcement of all laws, rules, and regulations as delegated to the department and commission.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Serves as the first-line supervisor for sworn enforcement personnel assigned to a District in and enforcement division
  • Patrols public/private land and waters, including federal waters, using a variety of specialized equipment while enforcing laws, rules and regulations to protect and preserve the fish and wildlife resources and the citizens of the state
  • Provides public safety services on the waterways of the state
  • Conducts investigations of crimes, crime scenes, and boating crash scenes for the purpose of gathering physical evidence and witness testimony to be used in determining criminal causes and in prosecuting suspects
  • Identifies and apprehends suspected violators, makes arrests, investigates related crimes, crime scenes and vessel scene crashes for the purpose of gathering witness testimony and physical evidence to be used in prosecuting suspects
  • Responds to calls for service from the public and takes appropriate actions, including but not limited to providing requested information, performing search and rescue and first responder missions, rendering first aid and providing enforcement assistance to other agencies
  • Secures areas impacted by natural and manmade disasters and civil disturbances
  • Participates as trained and directed in search and rescue operations and operations of maritime security
  • Conducts internal investigations in reference to offenses committed by a subordinate Agent; prepares necessary reports and makes recommendations for disciplinary action the the Wildlife Enforcement Captain or higher ranking Agent
  • Oversees enforcement activities on all Wildlife Management Areas located within their district

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Five years of experience in wildlife conservation law enforcement in the Enforcement Division of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Three years of this experience must have been in a position equivalent or higher in scope of responsibility and/or complexity of work performed to a Wildlife Enforcement Senior Agent in state service.


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess a valid Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment.

Active Police Officers Standard of Training (POST) certification and current annual training requirements.

Qualified to be an ex officio notary public.

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by the State and Federal laws is granted.


NOTE:

This job has special physical requirements in that the incumbent must lift heavy objects (50 lbs. or more), walk long distances, work in harsh weather conditions, fire handguns, rifles, and shotguns accurately and have the ability to operate vehicles, boats, and all terrain vehicles while in the performance of duties.
