Overview

The Education Quality Division of the Agency of Education (AOE) is seeking an enthusiastic and mission driven individual to be an Assistant Director. The Education Quality Division provides oversight, resources, and technical assistance for Licensing, Continuous Improvement, and Independent Schools. This position will provide statewide leadership, oversight and support to Vermont supervisory unions and districts (SUs/SDs), schools, independent schools, educators, and communities. The Assistant Director will also work and collaborate with other individuals and teams in the Vermont Agency of Education, other state agencies, and educational organizations. Experience providing training and technical assistance, grant management, contract management, supervision, and managing projects are important qualities of the ideal candidate.

This position is subject to State Personnel Policies and Agency of Education guidelines for telework, which include all in-person, all remote, and hybrid options subject to the needs of the Agency. In-state and some out-of-state travel will be required at times.



Specific job duties of the Assistant Director may include:

  • Providing support, leadership, and supervision for teams administering Vermont’s licensing system and processes.
  • Providing support, leadership, and supervision for the Independent School team.
  • Development and management of grants and contracts.
  • Providing statewide leadership and support for ongoing development and implementation of quality standards.
  • Working with individuals and teams within the Vermont Agency of Education, other state agencies and Supervisory Unions or School Districts on specific projects or to develop policies, systems and structures to support implementation of educational initiatives.
  • Contributing to establishing organizational mission and vision, creating planning and policy documents, and improving or restructuring existing programs to meet the needs of the field.
  • Developing guidance, technical assistance and presentations.
  • Experience with use of Microsoft 365 platforms preferred.

Environmental Factors

Normal office working conditions generally prevail. Incumbent must be able to interact, work, and deal with Agency staff, educators, state, federal, and local officials, and the general public. Evening and weekend work may be required. Travel will be required to carry out job duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in education or closely related field AND five (5) years or more of professional level experience in education administration or other leadership position in an educational organization or related non-profit or social sector organization.
OR
Bachelor’s degree in education or closely related field AND three (3) years or more of professional level experience in education administration or other leadership position in an education organization or related non-profit or social sector organization AND two (2) years of the duties listed above which have been performed at the Agency of Education.
