Job Summary


The Department of Corrections has an exciting Statutory Unclassified opportunity per Minnesota Statutes 43A.08 Subd 1(3), as the Senior Administrative Officer.

The Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Education serves as the Chief Administrative Officer responsible for directing and managing the administrative and operational responsibilities for the Education Division encompassing Secondary Education and Post-Secondary Partnerships. This position also represents the Department of Corrections' education issues on a state and national level to the legislature, other state agencies, regulatory enforcement agencies, local school districts, public and private colleges, and non-profit organizations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications are required of all applicants seeking consideration for this position:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Education, School Administration, Educational Administration and Leadership, Community Education, or a related field.
  • Five years of experience administering education programs in a school district, a state agency, higher education institute, community education program, or alternative secondary school
  • Demonstrated leadership experience. Leadership experience can include experience as a supervisor, lead worker, team lead, project lead, or completion of a State of Minnesota Leadership program (e.g. ELI or SLI), or comparable leadership program.

Applicants that meet the above minimum qualifications will be further evaluated on the following:

  • Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to the administration of secondary education programs, including requirements for licensing and credentialing of programs and staff
  • Knowledge and experience with strategic planning, public policy, and administrative principles.
  • Advanced human relation skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are strongly desired of applicants seeking consideration for this position:

  • Eight years of experience administering education programs in a school district, a state agency, higher education institute, community education program, or alternative secondary school
  • Extensive supervision experience
  • Leadership and organizational development experience
  • Experience in institution building, relevant to in-prison programing and forming alliances across public and private partnerships

Physical Requirements

Additional Requirements

The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations and/or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy. Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check which includes successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation.

Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy. This may include a review of job performance and discipline records.
