Overview

The Aviation Maintenance Worker is a mission critical position with responsibilities that include keeping the Springfield, VT State airport safely operating in compliance with FAA and State of Vermont regulations. Aviation Maintenance Workers are required to undergo extensive training in airport operations to work on an airfield, including runway/safety areas, snow removal operations to avoid airfield lighting and navigational aids, as well as snow storage management to assure snowbank height is not a risk to plane operations. All airfield maintenance operations require training to work around aircraft and flight operations, including radio operations. This position will be required to learn how to operate the sweeper/blower which sweeps the runway surface during snow events to keep any precipitation from freezing on the surface. During non-winter months this position is responsible for mowing, repainting pavement markings, lighting changes, ditch cleaning, stormwater retention pond cleaning and other maintenance activities required by FAA and State permits.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed both in a facility and primarily in the field. Duties require exposure to extreme outdoor weather. An incumbent must be available for considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or other emergencies. Employees may be required to report to work outside of their work schedule and must be reachable by phone. An employee must be able to use tools and lift materials commonly used in routine maintenance work. Normal dangers associated with work on or near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and responding to accidents, emergencies and natural disasters are present. May be exposed to blood and airborne pathogens. Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required. Travel throughout the state to various airports may be required. Stress may be involved in negotiating and obtaining compliance with contracts, tenants and users.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years or more of transportation maintenance or construction experience INCULDING BOTH one season or more of operating a snow plow with or without wings AND six months or more of operating medium or heavy equipment, such as graders, rollers, and backhoes.
OR
One (1) year as an Airport Maintenance Worker I.


Note: An incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in inventory or store control and lighting and electrical.

Special Requirements

Complete Vermont State Aeronautics Training program within the first 6 months of employment.
