Reporting to the Executive Director of Advising and Counseling Services, Interlochen Arts Academy is seeking a dynamic, student-centered, and collaborative professional to serve as an Academic and College Counselor to begin in August of 2023. The Counselor will work with students in grades 9-12 and is responsible for articulating the value of a Interlochen education, and contributing to the strength and success of the Academic and College Counseling program by helping to manage and plan efforts related to post-secondary preparations, applications, college admissions and enrollment, and preparing students to achieve academic excellence through the pursuit of higher learning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Monitor each student’s academic/artistic progress and keep records of students’ curriculum, testing, academic work, and extracurricular engagements. Support students’ academic success and curriculum development. Manage a caseload of approximately 60 seniors and 90 underclassmen.
Meet individually and counsel students and families using differentiated strategies appropriate to the student and their circumstances and abilities. Discussion of college admissions and financial aid process, help develop their final college list and/or post-secondary plans, assist with application materials and ensure that each student reaches their goals. Writing school recommendation letters for students for college applications, summer programs, scholarships, etc. Communicate
Preparing and editing written and online communication with students, parents and staff.
Manage oneself by being organized, prepared, and punctual; meet deadlines; follow through on commitments in a manner that enhances the school community. Act in ways that directly support the mission of Interlochen Center for the Arts.
Meet with students to map out a plan for academic course selection and registration, summer plans and college admissions
Conduct individual and group sessions in all areas of college counseling. Developing and co-hosting day/evening presentations on a variety of topics related to the college application process.
Develop and maintain rapport and effective relationships with colleagues, adolescents and adults in carrying out duties and responsibilities by using courtesy, diplomacy, collaboration, cooperation, and professional conduct.
Organizing, communicating and overseeing the coordination of the PSAT, SAT and TOEFL exams (some Saturdays required). Serve as the TOEFL test coordinator.
Understanding and utilizing Scoir or other admissions tracking tools to enhance services, report results and outcomes, and manage data and information.
Maintain high ethical standards and legal responsibility.
Pursue professional development to increase knowledge of private and public university and college admissions practices through conferences, webinars, college visits, etc. Interacting and networking with college admissions representatives.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience and Skills:
Education: Bachelor’s degree required, a Master’s in Counseling, other educational or arts related field is preferred
Experience:
A minimum of 3 years of experience in college/school counseling and/or college admissions preferred
Knowledge of a wide range of colleges, conservatories, and overseas universities.
Equipment Familiarity:
Technological proficiencies in the following application: MS Office, Google Workspace, Scoir, Zoom, and a familiarity navigating both a Student Information System and Learning Management System. Knowledge of ETS Supervisors and Salesforce is helpful.
Certifications, Licenses or Special Training:
Must meet and maintain background screening requirements, as detailed in policy 12.HR.01 Pre-Employment and Employee Background Checks.
