The Department of Criminal Justice Service is seeking a collaborative and innovative team player to serve as a full-time research analyst with our Criminal Justice Research Center in Richmond, Virginia. The successful candidate will work with data from various criminal justice and other data systems, prepare presentations and reports for audiences in and out of government, and plan research and evaluation projects to answer important questions and to help state and local agencies provide the best service to Virginians. What you will do:
- Compile research data via existing databases, interviews, surveys, review of program policies and procedures, assessment of past research and literature, examination of case files, and other sources.
- Build and maintain Research Center databases using data from various sources, such as jails, law enforcement agencies, and other state agencies.
- Prepare research reports, presentations, tables, charts, and fact sheets presenting the results of research and data analysis.
- Explain research methods and results in a manner appropriate for various target audiences.
- Analyze data on crimes, arrests, jail populations, drug seizures, court processing, and other relevant criminal justice sources to identify factors to help forecast the local responsible population in jails and/or identify emerging trends in Virginia’s criminal justice environment.
- Serve on various workgroups to provide expertise on criminal justice data and research methods.
- Work with analysts from various agencies and the private sector to support grant-related and other initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated skill and experience constructing, organizing, and managing databases.
- Demonstrated skill and experience with statistical analysis and interpretation of data.
- Experience with statistical software, such as SPSS, R, SAS, or Eviews.
- Experience with data management software, such as Access.
- Experience presenting data and preparing reports.
- Skill with standard office software, such as Microsoft Office and Google Workspace (formerly G Suite).
- Experience working as an active, contributing team member, as well as an independent and self-motivated employee.
- Ability to think strategically and cross culturally, and independently implement new initiatives and projects.
- Demonstrated ability to meet critical deadlines, handle multiple assignments with changing priorities, and ensure timeliness and quality of completed assignments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Significant experience working with criminal justice datasets – law enforcement, courts, corrections, etc.
- Working knowledge of the criminal justice system in Virginia.
- A post-secondary education to include bachelors, masters, or other professional training/certification in areas related to statistical data analysis and reporting, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Interview candidates may be required to demonstrate the skills and abilities necessary for satisfactory performance of work. The individual may also be responsible for submitting an annual Statement of Personal Economic Interest. In addition, the selected candidate who begins original employment or re-employment in this position must serve a 12-month probationary period effective from the date of employment. The anticipated starting salary range is $75,000 to $85,000 plus the state’s benefits package.
