Description & Details: The Community Forestry Specialist provides technical urban and community forestry assistance and support statewide to communities, local units of government, partner agency staff, and others. Responsibilities include conducting community tree inventories, providing sound community forest management advice and plans, assisting with forest health surveys, assisting communities with project planning and grant applications, identifying tree pest issues, and assisting with tree care ordinances. The specialist engages with local groups, individuals, and agency partners to encourage and implement sustainable practices which improve community forests.
Work Schedule: 8-5, M-F with occasional evening and weekend work.
Advertised Salary: $45,284 + DOE
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from an SAF-accredited institution plus 3 months experience, or bachelor’s degree in a related discipline plus one year of field experience.
- Valid driver's license.
- Skills that demonstrate knowledge and expertise in community forestry, forest management, arboriculture, natural resources management, conservation, or closely related fields.
- Basic computer skills and ability to use Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- The ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, partners and stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with individuals and groups.
- Ability to conduct oneself professionally, be self-directed in the work environment and work flexible and extended hours.
- Willingness and ability to travel alone, stay overnight and work in semi-rural areas.
- An interest and ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and a commitment to the principles of diversity.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Meet minimum qualifications, plus:
- Recent work experience in community forestry, forestry, extension, soils, conservation, or arboriculture.
- Basic skills using forestry tools including GIS software.
- Current ISA-Certified Arborist.

The North Dakota Forest Service is the state agency which administers cooperative forestry programs statewide. The agency provides technical assistance relating to the management of private forest lands, state forest lands, urban and community forests, tree planting, and wildfire protection. The agency works in cooperation with rural landowners, urban residents, communities, rural fire districts, schools, and other government entities to direct and strengthen forestry services. The Forest Service also operates a tree seedling nursery and manages state forest lands.
