The hiring range for this position is $23.2162 - $29.0203/hour ($48,290 - $60,362/annual).

The Streets Operations Specialist performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of various infrastructure including streets, multi-use paths, sidewalks, bridges, drainage systems, and signage. This is a full journey-level position and is distinguished from the entry level by the performance of the full range of duties assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintains and repairs streets, unpaved roads, and public grounds
  • Operates a variety of equipment including tandem dump trucks, backhoes, Vac-trailer, front-end loaders, street sweepers, tractors, motor grader, mowers, jackhammer and various other hand tools
  • Provides 24-hour on-call response as needed for emergency situations and snow and ice removal from city streets
  • Completes and submits daily Cartegraph reports, and electronic payroll timesheets in an accurate and timely manner
  • Takes responsibility for own actions when errors and mistakes occur
  • In field leadership with installation and maintenance of drainage systems, street sweeping, concrete repair, pavement maintenance, pavement markings, signs, public rights-of-way, public infrastructure, work zone set up, barricade set up, flagging, and in preparations and setup for City-wide and department special events which may require flexed scheduling and working on holidays
  • Applies chemicals, fertilizers, and other hazardous materials following all safety precautions
  • Operates hand tools, vehicles, and equipment following all safety precautions
  • Promotes a culture of safety in the workplace and reports safety hazards when observed
  • Applies industry standards and codes to the completion of daily tasks and projects
  • Fosters a culture of safety in the workplace and reports safety hazards when observed
  • Accepts new work assignments and schedules work hours to meet the needs of the organization
  • Assists with training less experienced crew members on work projects and procedures
  • Leads Operations Technicians and seasonal employees in routine tasks
  • Cooperates with co-workers, supervisor and other departments to foster the spirit of a team environment
  • Works with other City employees to achieve City goals
  • Communicates ideas clearly and respectfully, listens to all customers and acts accordingly
  • Understands written and verbal assignments and asks questions if needed

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and a minimum of three years of experience in street and traffic maintenance required. Must possess Class B Commercial Driver's License and maintain during course of employment. Flagger certification is required within one year of hire and must be maintained during the course of employment. Other experience or certifications may be required for some primary duty assignments. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Solid knowledge of principles and practices of pavement and roadside maintenance
  • Solid knowledge of equipment operating principles, hazards' and safety precautions
  • Solid knowledge of safe operational procedures in the use of heavy equipment, machines, tools, chemicals and toxic agents
  • Solid computer, tablet, and smartphone knowledge to create and complete Cartegraph tasks, MapitFast software, electronic time-sheets and be able to read and respond to emails and text messages
  • Knowledge of City and department policies and procedures
  • Basic understanding of industry standards and codes and how to implement them in the daily completion of projects
  • Necessary competence in performing minor equipment maintenance and repairs
  • Ability to lead and develop relationships with people from diverse backgrounds

  • Other Equipment: Ability to operate snow plow, one-ton dump truck, skid steer, backhoe, roller, loader, grader, street sweeper, weed tractor, boom truck, striper, sign-making equipment, air compressor, jackhammer, welder, torch set, concrete saw, trencher, weed trimmers, trailer, vibratory plate, Vac-trailer, ladders, chainsaw, and hand tools
  • Physical Activities: High physical activity that may include walking, sitting, standing, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and carrying
  • Lifting: Frequently lifts, carries, and exerts up to 80 pounds. Ability to lift up to 100 pounds with assistance
  • Vision and Hearing: Must have visual acuity to see and read paper and electronic documents. Must be able to answer telephones, communicate conversation and respond to verbal inquires. Must be able to differentiate color and shades of color and recognize standard street signage. Must be able to recognize sound on construction sites that indicate nearby equipment and/or safety hazards
  • Exposure to Environmental Conditions: Will be exposed to extreme heat, cold, dry, wet, odors, smoke, loud noises, vibrations, dust or intense light. Exposure to chemicals including cleaners, solvents, paints, and other toxic agents. Work may be performed in precarious or tight spaces.
  • Schedule: Position generally scheduled Monday - Friday; occasionally weekend work; will be required for on-call duty
