What You Will Be Doing
Are you a geoscientist or geological/mining engineering professional with knowledge of mineral exploration and mining practices, mining law and Alaska's world-class locatable mineral resources? This position provides technical review and support in the Mining Section's Large Mine Projects Group. This position conducts geologic and technical engineering reviews and permitting of large hard rock mining projects statewide.

Mission and Culture
The mission of the Division of Mining, Land and Water is to provide for the appropriate use and management of Alaska’s state-owned land and water, aiming for maximum use consistent with the public interest. The Division is proud of its hard-working, problem-solving culture. The Geologist 3 position provides geoscience and mining expertise to the Division of Mining Land & Water, with particular emphasis on the permitting and oversight of Large Hardrock Mines.

Core Responsibilities
This position will involve frequently conducting technical reviews of mining operation plans and reclamation plans, including the use of chemical treatment in the mining operations, the potential for acid generation and the costs associated with conducting reclamation activities. Additionally, this position will frequently attend a variety of meetings with mining companies and other stakeholders to discuss existing and future mining and reclamation plans. This position will also conduct site inspections of exploration programs and active and reclaimed mine sites for compliance with the submitted plans and State regulatory standards.

Benefits of Joining Our Team
This position is housed within the Mining Section, which has an extremely supportive, positive, family-like atmosphere. The successful applicant will have training and travel opportunities as well as opportunities for advancement within the Division and will work extensively with the public and other agencies to support the responsible development of Alaska’s natural resources.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
This position is located at the DNR Northern Region Office, which has a charming, wooded campus with great nearby amenities like trails, wetlands and coffee shops. There is a good balance of office to field work. The statewide scope of the overall permitting program means remote field travel can be expected to be conducted in all regions of the state. Past inspection and stewardship trips have been as far-reaching as the Western Arctic / Seward Peninsula, the Aleutians, Southeast Alaska, and areas reached from the Denali and Taylor Highways. Field travel will include flights in small, fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, boat, and ATV. Inspections will include making entry into active mining and exploration sites with heavy equipment in operation. The Division will provide Mine Safety and Health training to the successful incumbent.

This is a challenging and engaging job, with a diverse workload. The Large Mine Permitting Team staff work with a wide variety of stakeholders and the incumbent must be able to foster and maintain working relationships with local, state, and federal agency staff that we interact with routinely. Staff also interact frequently with the public during the permit adjudication process and the incumbent must be able to present complex and controversial information in a variety of venues.

Who We Are Looking For
This position provides professional expertise in the review, permitting, and compliance oversight of Large Hardrock Mines. The desired incumbent would possess:
  • Knowledge of mineral exploration and mining operations, mineral processing techniques, mine reclamation, land use principles and applicable state and federal statutes/regulations.
  • Knowledge of research techniques and writing protocols, project management, and public review processes.
  • ESRI /ArcGIS Pro and field data collection skills, including experience using GIS to create digital geologic and/or mine site maps.
  • Ability to interpret statutes, regulations, and policies to issue a variety of permits.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, including making presentations.
