Division Overview:
The Montana Highway Patrol (MHP) maintains jurisdiction over the highways of the fourth largest state in the country. Each year our communication center fields roughly 190,000 calls and dispatches our sworn officers to serve and protect. MHP troopers are the leading experts on crash investigation and perform a vast array of tasks from providing education and maintaining traffic safety, to intercepting the transit of illegal narcotics, contraband, and weapons, as well as detecting human trafficking and other criminal activity that takes place on our highways. MHP employs civilians in critical support positions such as radio technology, dispatchers, crash records, and administrative roles. Our goal is to serve Montana’s citizens and safeguard their lives and property as they travel our beautiful state fairly, professionally and compassionately.
Job Overview:
The Highway Patrol Division is the traffic law enforcement division of the Montana Department of Justice and is responsible for the enforcement of criminal and motor vehicle and highway safety laws on highways according to state and federal statutes, as well as vehicular crash investigations.
We are seeking five professional candidates who are looking for a career and an opportunity to serve the State of Montana.
At this time, we are only accepting Entry-level Trooper candidates who are available to attend the September 2023 academy. If there are additional vacancies after this recruitment cycle, the division will accept lateral applicants in the fall for a December-January advanced academy.
An entry-level candidate has not graduated from the MLEA Law Enforcement Officer Basic Course in Montana and does not have any previous law enforcement experience. Academy training is a resident academy in Helena/Boulder and is 24 weeks for entry-level candidates.
During the academy, candidates receive compensation at $20.35 per hour. All uniforms, weapons, gear, housing, and meals (except for days off) are provided. After successfully completing the training academy, candidates may be sworn in as Troopers. Candidates not employed upon completion of the academy, due to lack of trooper vacancies, will be placed on a reserve list. Candidates on the reserve list will be subject to an additional background investigation prior to appointment as a sworn trooper. Upon being sworn in as a trooper, the minimum starting pay is $25.44 per hour. In addition, the sworn Trooper positions are part of a collective bargaining unit represented by MFPE.
Initial screening will take place on May 16th-17th. Candidates successful in the initial screening process will be eligible to participate in the written testing. The written testing will be administered virtually. Candidates eligible to continue in the process will be provided testing dates via email. The tentative dates for the virtual testing are May 30th through June 2nd.
Candidates passing each phase may be eligible to proceed to the next phases in the selection process. The next phases include a one-on-one interview, job suitability testing, additional paperwork completion/supporting documents, backgrounds, and conditional offer testing. Correspondence regarding testing will be sent via email due to the number of anticipated applicants.
Choose where you want to live and work in Montana! Candidates who are successful in the selection process and offered employment to attend the academy will be allowed to select duty station assignments (pending final approval from the Chief of the Patrol). These assignments will be assumed after successful completion of the academy and Field Training Assignment.
