Sioux City police are offering an exciting opportunity to transcribe daily police dictation as an on-call word processor, said Chief Bill H. Rumsfeld of the Sioux city police department.
The position requires a thorough knowledge of word processing, programming languages, and related software. Qualified candidates must possess strong typing and grammar skills as well as the ability to work independently and be able to type 50 WPM; accuracy is a must.
This position works up to 28 hours a week and has a flexible schedule, which includes weekends and holidays.
Duties
Under general direction of the lead word processor or designee, the company provides a diverse and skilled variety of skilled and specialized word processing and transcribing services to an automated city-wide network.
- He retrieves, transcribes and enters the police's dictation.
- Proofreads completed documents, corrects grammar, spelling, typographical and punctuation errors.
- The file system stores completed documents on a computer hard drive.
- The agency responds to requests regarding the status of its investigations.
- The system helps the user with the proper use of the system.
- Transcribes the proper format for reports.
- Within established guidelines, he sets work priorities and schedules within the workplace and maintains confidentiality of work.
- Regular attendance and punctual work.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other officials, other agencies, employees, the general public, and other employees.
- Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the case that an employee is excused from work for being absent, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared disaster.
Qualifications
What are cognitive demands, skills and abilities? : Ability to apply current office technology, resources, and services; ability to efficiently process complex data, records and reports regarding operations and services; ability to meet established production criteria and the ability to use the English language effectively.
Job Knowledge : Requires a thorough and complete knowledge of up-to- date word processing, data entry, software and related practices; knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure knowledge of the capabilities and operating features of the word processing equipment used.
What are the differences between language ability and interpersonal communication? : Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to employees using the word processing system; requires the ability to speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees; read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; maintain good interpersonal relationships; ability to display high standards of ethical conduct and refrain from dishonest behavior.
Physical Requirements : Precise use of fingers, arms to enter data into a P.C. accurately and quickly; ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, ands, and wrists; ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands; ability to see at a distance of 20” or less and hear within normal limits with or without corrective assistance; ability to identify and understand the speech of another person.
Usually, the weight is up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 30 pounds.
Work Environment : Work is normally performed in a normal inside office environment with appropriate heating and cooling and is not subject to significant occupational or environmental hazards other than those normally associated with general office work .
Minimum Required Qualifications
Must provide a typing test dated within the last 12 (12) months of application.
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. and two (2) years of clerical work experience, and must provide a typing test from an accredited institution or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities.
