The mission of the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) is to protect and preserve the state's agriculture, environment, and natural resources with the vision of a prosperous economy, diverse agricultural opportunities, clean air, and healthy families.

The DANR's Water Rights Program is looking for a water right permitting administrator to assist with the protection of South Dakota water resources through the administration of the water right permitting process.

DANR Water Rights Program administers water resources by regulating the appropriation of water in South Dakota through the regulation of surface water and groundwater sources, to the fullest extent they are capable of. This is done in accordance with state law.

The position oversees the processing of water permit applications to appropriate the state's water resources and maintains the administrative records for water rights in South Dakota. The role is closely associated with the Chief Engineer, Public notice officer and two Program Assistants. '

The position is responsible for scheduling contested applications before the Water Management Board, including drafting notices to parties of record. The position also determines the agenda for meetings.

This position may provide expert testimony in contested case hearings on water permit applications or other Water Management Board issues. '

The position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills to share the Water Rights Program's requirements with internal and external customers, including DANR staff, government officials, engineers/consultants, contractors, and well drillers. The position reports to the Chief Engineer for water permits.

Nature of Work:
