The Montana Code, Annotated 7-32-303, states that applicants must meet certain qualifications, including but not limited to: Employment as a Peace Officer, Education, and Certification standards.

Must hold US citizenship. ?

A valid Montana driver's license is required or can be obtained prior to hiring the vehicle.

To succeed, one must have a high school diploma or GED.

Should be at least 18 years old.

To demonstrate typing ability, one must take a typing test.

Must not have a prior felony conviction, including deferments and withheld judgments.'

Must avoid any charges related to domestic assault or battery, including deferments and withheld judgments.

Must possess good moral character, as assessed by a comprehensive background check.'

The preference is given to those who possess a Montana P.O.S.T. Board Basic Certificate (or an equivalent from another state), two years of college, and/or two consecutive years of military service with an honorable discharge.

Pass the Montana Physical Abilities Test (MPAT) with flying colors.

To pass the medical and mental health assessments.

This position involves, but is not limited to, the following fundamental duties:

The job requires participation in various law-making activities such as crime prevention, investigations, arrests, and traffic regulations. It also involves basic police duties and responsibilities that include intense physical activity at times, contact with unpleasant physical conditions, care for safety equipment, procedures, etc., along with regular interaction with the public to prevent injury. This position is expected to involve substantial personal visits from both employees and civil partners.

A rotating schedule for 12 hour shifts, which may include day and night shifts. Shifts require a 4 day work-week, and no preference for seniority is given. The minimum level of staffing required for shift positions is 1 year of probationary service; officers must also always have accompanied partners on shift during shift 2, and they must not work alone. Additionally, officers are prohibited from working alone while on duty.

Starting base salary will be $23.20 per hour, for a total of $50,808 annually. Overtime opportunities are frequently present. Note: Overtime opportunities may be frequently present.)* Additional pay includes $2.00 per hour night shift differential. If POST certified, with three years’ experience, a higher starting salary is available. Each POST Certificate, beyond the Basic Certificate, adds a stipend. Paid holiday, vacation and sick time is provided. Health insurance is provided by the City of Lewistown. Uniforms, including weapon are provided upon hire. $600.00 per year uniform maintenance allowance is provided after first year of employment. Employees may become members of the AFSCME local 1441 union. Employees must also pay into the Montana State Municipal Police Officers Retirement System.
