Why does a job exist?
This position provides legal advice to the General Counsel of the Office of State Engineering by providing advanced technical research and functions as a team lead for special projects that may arise. This includes litigation support, administrative support and unambiguous support of legislative efforts.
How do I get things done? What are some tips?
1. Provides general legal clerk support to General Counsel and Deputies and
other attorneys in the Litigation and Adjudication Program (LAP), as needed
for litigation and adjudications, including administrative hearings, water
rights adjudications, district court and appellate court cases in both federal
and state court. Organize, assemble and maintain legal files. Prepare, copy,
assemble, mail and email legal and other documents to meet court-imposed
deadlines. Prepare pleadings, motions and correspondence. Coordinate and
prepare the final versions of appellate briefs and motions, including cite-
checking, proofreading, preparing tables of authorities and tables of
contents. File legal documents with court. Assist attorneys in trial
preparation, at hearings, trials or mediations/settlement conferences by
preparing exhibits, trial notebooks, and pleadings.
2. Provides legislative support to the General Counsel and the agency during
the legislative session. This includes tracking bills, tracking bill analyses,
and coordinating legislative testimony.
3. Provides general administrative support to General Counsel and secondarily
assistance to the Deputy General Counsel, managing attorneys, staff attorneys
and contract attorneys within the Litigation and Adjudication Program.
Administrative support includes coordinating travel , depositions, meetings,
and contractor invoices, as well as managing schedules and court filed
deadlines related to active cases.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be able to:
- Under tight deadlines, work with accuracy.
- Provide legal assistance with drafting, reviewing and filing legal papers for hearings.
- Organize pleadings, motions, memoranda and briefs for attorneys.
- How do I prepare for trial? Experience with preparing exhibits.
- Experience with court systems and processes for filings.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Paralegal, Legal Science, Education, History, Communications, Psychology and Sociology may substitute for the required education and experience or current enrollment with at least two (2) semesters of relevant UX experience to include the preparation and review of legal documents. Employment Requirements
This position is required to drive a state-owned vehicle. This position requires the holder of a valid New Mexico driver's license, or must pass and obtain a Desire to Learn Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work performed primarily in an office setting with extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some travel may be required, with an ability to handle tight deadlines and multiple demands related to work requirements.
