Description

The Office of the Defender General (ODG) is seeking an experienced and motivated Financial Director to lead the financial operations of our collegial department.

In this position you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of tasks as part of the department’s management team. Reporting directly to the Defender General, you will be responsible for overseeing all financial activities of the ODG and ensuring the department’s financial integrity and internal controls. You will be responsible for working directly with the Defender General on the ODG’s budget development, monitoring, and reporting.

As the financial lead for the department, you will also advise the Defender General and other members of the management team regularly about the status of the department’s expenditures, analyze certain expenditures, and forecast future needs. You will also support the department by taking responsibility for contract administration and asset management, in addition to using the State’s Financial system on a daily basis to create or approve transactions. Much of this work entails hands-on spreadsheet entry and analysis, document creation, or entry of transactions requiring very close attention to detail.

In this role, you will work closely with the department's Administrative Services Manager and Financial Specialists, as well as co-supervise three Legal Assistants.

Compensation

This is an exempt, pay grade 28 (salary range: $71,281-$12,403) managerial position with state benefits. The total compensation package of the state includes an outstanding set of employee benefits here.

Minimum Requirements

B.S. in accounting or a bachelor's degree in any discipline that includes or is supplemented by 20 credit hours of accounting, budgeting, financial auditing, federal program financial administration or other professional-level fiscal operations experience which has included managing a major financial program or operation.

OR

A master's degree in accounting, business or public administration or a related field and at least one (1) year of professional level accounting and budgeting, financial analysis, federal program management or other professional level financial operations experience including managing a major financial program or operation. '

OR

An associate's degree and four (4) years of professional level accounting, budgeting, and financial auditing experience plus other professional level financial operations experience which includes experience managing programs, funding sources or staff or six (6) years of experience leading a significant financial program or section.

OR

High school diploma or equivalent and seven (7) years of professional level accounting, budgeting, financial auditing, federal program financial administration or other professional level financial operations experience which has included experience managing programs, funding sources or staff. '

OR

One (1) year as a financial manager with the state of Vermont.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate is positive, motivated, able to work under pressure and highly detail oriented. The ideal person will also have excellent verbal and written communication skills and problem solving skills. "

Prior management and budget experience, including working with the state of Vermont's Vertical Budgeting and VISION accounting systems (VISION is the state's PeopleSoft Financial Management System), is preferred but not required. Intermediate or advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and Word are also preferred.
