The position in charge of assigned equipment for water and wastewater operations and construction projects is responsible for managing assigned equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from a standard senior-high school or GED equivalent, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); and
  • Construction equipment, including backhoes, excavators, dump trucks, low-boys, boring machines, trenchers, and/or tanker trucks, can be operated by someone with one (1) year of experience in the construction industry.
  • Possession of a Grade I Water certification preferred.
  • Water treatment and distribution system knowledge, skills, and operations preferred.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT/PROMOTION/DEMOTION/TRANSFER:

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required for an operator's license. (PBA 9/10/01)
  • Within eighteen (18) months of being employed or promoted into this position, employees are required to obtain a Water Certification as per the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) regulation and Dothan Utilities Water Division - Operator Certification Program 335-10.   • Within 120 days of being hired for this position, employees must obtain an unrestricted commercial driver license (CDL) within 120 days. (Call for more information.)
  • An employee in this position must report to their regular workstation within 30 minutes from the time of notification in an emergency and/or standby situation. (Sec. 2-30. (2) / PBA 1/9/95) This requirement must be met within six (6) months of employment or promotion.
  • Employees in this position must be accessible to be contacted via phone within 30 days of employment/promotion/demotion/transfer, due to call out requirements, in order to be considered.
  • The candidate for this position has their background screened through a variety of tests, such as a criminal background check, credit background check, past employment history, and reference background checks. All applicants must pass an interview setup procedure.
  • The City of Dothan policy requires employees to undergo drug and alcohol testing, which includes pre-employment and random drug tests for the entire duration of employment in this role, as per City policy. (PBA 8/13/12)
  • Must pass the physical examination requirements of the City of Dothan, including drug and alcohol testing. Additionally, they must pass a background check.

Application / Examination

The assessment of qualified applicants will be based on their application documentation, which includes information about their training and experience. The final grade will consist of 40 % of this assessment, and the skills test will comprise the remainder 60 %.

The skills test for the position of Equipment Operator III (Water) is scheduled for September 27, 2023.

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will receive an email notification to self-schedule for the skills test. If you do not schedule your skills test online, you will not be able to take the test.

To complete two (2) stations, you will need twenty-nine (29) minutes to complete them. Plan to spend a few hours at the testing site for a few days.
