Duties

  • Provides specific directions to customers on how to file and meet the eligibility requirements for various land and mineral uses. Applyes substantial knowledge, background in the mission of the BLM and research to respond to a variety of complex inquiries.
  • Provides information about wild horse and burro adoptions, map purchases, area archeology & history. Provides information to members of the public on types of recreational opportunities available on the BLM and other federal agencies.
  • Explains rules related to the use of recreational areas and facilities, and informs and persuades people to obtain greater public support in protecting resources. '
  • Keeps well-informed of all changes in laws and regulations affecting public lands and explains these changes to members of the public.
  • Sells documents, maps, books, and copies of records, as well as national parks and other similar materials. He is designated as a cashier/collections officer.
  • Reviews initial documents being filed for adherence to the filing requirements, examines appropriate land status records and assists with the processing of payments and filing legal documents.
  • Writes letters, memos, and reports and makes entries into automated systems from handwritten notes.

Specialized Experience: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04) in the federal service. Specialized experience is further defined as experience in accomplishing routine support tasks in a busy office environment; providing information to the public and internal customers by phone, email, and in person; preparing written correspondence using automated systems; and maintaining files and related materials.

Education: Completed 4 years of education above high school in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the prerequisite.

Combination of education and experience. : Have and equivalent combination of the experience and education described above. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of study is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year, is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

At the GS-06 Level:
Specialized Experience: One (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) in the Federal service. Specialized experience is further defined as experience that includes answering internal and external inquiries with detailed information; preparing written correspondence with complex subject matter; provide assistance to employees and the general public; conduct research to respond to inquiries such as laws, regulations, and organizational policies; and maintaining records and files.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through national service programs (e.g., United States Penitentiary; philanthropy; religious), ethical organizations, nonprofits, municipal governments, and schools) and can provide valuable training and experience that can be turned into paid employment.
