Position Overview
The Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a Security Officer for the Elgin Mental Health Center located in Elgin, Illinois to perform safety and protection duties on an assigned shift. Enforces regulations and controls, responds to disturbances, intervenes with combative patients, assists unit and program staff in restoring order and in the handling of combative/aggressive patients. Monitors suicidal or homicidal patients and administers emergency first aid or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Initiates fire/emergency procedures. Patrols grounds and building.
Job Responsibilities
1. Performs safety and protection duties at the Elgin Mental Health Center on an assigned shift.
2. Enforces regulations and controls, responds to disturbances, intervenes with combative patients, assists unit and program staff in restoring order and in the handling of combative/aggressive patients.
3. Retrains/controls patients during arrests and investigations.
4. Operates the main door electronic locking system for the forensic building.
5. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Two (2) years of experience working with security requirements and regulations for a public or private organization.
2. Two (2) years of experience working emergency response procedures including fire safety and controls for a public or private organization.
3. Two (2) years of experience in the use of security enforcement practices and techniques.
4. Two (2) years of experience providing initial responses to security breaches and safety hazards.
5. Two (2) years of experience communicating effectively both orally and in writing.
6. One (1) year of basic proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office with basic computer skills.
Conditions of Employment
1. Requires the ability to walk and stand for a significant period of time, including stooping, bending, and lifting.
2. Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
3. Requires ability to administer emergency first aid.
4. Requires the ability to acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
5. Requires the ability to travel and a valid Illinois driver’s license.
6. Requires the ability to become OIG rule 50.3 certified within 90 days of employment.
7. Requires the ability to physically restrain patients as necessary to prevent injury to patient or others.
8. Requires the ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance.
9. Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
10. Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
