The Public Services Supervisor, under the supervision of the Deputy Director of Public Services, is responsible for a variety of public services related and supervisory duties. This position (1FTE) directly supervises all Public Services Library Assistants and serves as first point-of-contact and emergency coordinator for the library in the absence of Library Management. This position is responsible for delivering frontline patron services, department operations support, programmatic support, and many other duties. It oversees the most visible staff and direct customer service link to the patrons served, and performs most of the day to day customer contact, operational tasks, and workflow direction. Public Service Supervisor actively demonstrates a propensity and desire to engage with patrons, provide courteous and prompt service, and advance the library’s day to day operations and mission.
Public Service Supervisors at the Middleton Public Library work in a fast-paced, customer focused environment. Supervisors also help create an inviting library work atmosphere where co-workers feel informed and appreciated. Library experience is not necessarily required, a willingness to learn and a positive attitude is most important. Opening and closing shifts are part of the position including rotating Saturday work.

Essential:
- Leads library staff in demonstrating standards of excellent public service.
- Directs and supervises workflow of operations between processing stations and points of service.
- Participates in the interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluation library staff.
- Knowledge of library emergency procedures and policies.
- Provide excellent patron services at service desks. This includes, but is not limited to, reference questions, readers’ advisory, program registration/information, database instruction, and general library and community information.
- Provide patron account services including updating and registering new cardholders. Perform general circulation tasks such as, but not limited to, placing and processing holds, checking materials in and out, and collecting fines and fees.
- Participates in maintaining a safe, clean, and visually appealing environment.
- Assists patrons with general use of computers, photocopiers, microfilm reader, and provides general supervision of computer spaces.
- Assists patrons with personal devices and downloadable content.
- Performs general operational procedures such as opening and closing meeting rooms, and opening and closing the library.
- Serves as building supervisor evenings and weekends, or when scheduled.
- Provides facility support and maintenance by contacting necessary vendors.

Knowledge:
- Considerable knowledge of library methods and procedures, and ability to apply them to library operations and services.
Skills:
- Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.
- Excellent time-management skills.
Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff and public and maintain effective public relations.
- Ability to operate library business machinery properly, including managing computerized files.
- Working knowledge of English grammar and spelling.
- Keyboarding and filing ability.
- Willingness to maintain skills in above-mentioned areas through active participation in appropriate continuing education workshops and other library skills learning experiences.
Education:
- Completion of Bachelor's degree from an accredited school or equivalent work experience
Experience:
- One or more years of supervisory experience.
- One or more years of library experience.
- Computer and general office experience.
