The Executive Director of Regional Development provides strategic leadership for all regional based major gift programs at Villanova University. Specifically, the Executive Director manages the various Sr. Directors and Directors of Regional Major Giving, to whom the regional fundraisers report. The Executive Director, under the leadership of the Assistant Vice President for Major Gifts, Regions and Constituents, will be responsible for planning and executing an aggressive major gifts program for all regions. The Executive Director strategically strengthens and invests in the culture of regional major giving programs, providing inspiring leadership and management to ensure the prospect pools for all regions are cultivated to their greatest philanthropic potential. In addition to supervising the Regional based major gift program, the Executive Director will be directly responsible for the cultivation and solicitation of a pool of up to 60 leadership prospects. The Executive Director will contribute to the overall advancement component by providing creative problem solving and the integration of a consistent vision, strategy, structure, and best practices throughout the regional advancement offices.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manages a small portfolio (50-60) of leadership prospects and cultivates philanthropic gifts from this portfolio.
  • Provide strategic leadership and management for all regional fundraising activities including but not limited to outlining a vision, strategy, structure, and best practices for the regional based major gift programs. Establish priorities and revenue goals for each regional fundraising team.
  • Supervise regional directors of major giving and major gift officers; monitor portfolio performance, major gift strategies, revenue expectations, donor stewardship initiatives, and special event plans as implemented by regional directors and their respective team members. Provide ongoing feedback regarding professional development consistent with the University’s performance management process and foster a culture of continuous improvement and high performance.
  • Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Seven to ten years of successful and progressively responsible leadership experience in the development field required.
  • In-depth knowledge of all areas of the development function, including major gifts and regional fundraising efforts required.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership experience required.
  • Experience in higher education fundraising is highly desirable.
  • A deep appreciation for the educational mission and aspirations of Villanova University is required, as well as a desire to play a meaningful role in the University community and to share in the community’s enthusiastic commitment to the institution.
  • An approach to management that yields pride, ownership, and open communication among staff is required.
  • Demonstrated accomplishment in the acquisition of major gifts required.
  • The ideal candidate will have served successfully as a major gifts fundraiser and manager, preferably in a large university environment, and possess thorough understanding of academic administration as it relates to private sector fundraising.
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Ability to interact effectively and productively with all levels of staff at the University required.
  • Diplomacy, tact and discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality required.
  • Proven skills as a strategist with the ability to articulate a vision for the future and to build and institutionalize an organization capable of fulfilling that vision.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • CFRE desirable.

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
Evening and weekend commitments required on a regular basis. Ability to travel required.
