The Greenville County Department of Public Safety Forensic Division is seeking a highly motivated and dynamic professional to work in the exciting field of forensics. Join the largest governmental forensic laboratory located in the growing Upstate of South Carolina. The Department of Public Safety Forensic Division is seeking a qualified applicant to fill a vacant Criminalist/Latent Print Examiner position for the Latent Print Section located in Greenville, South Carolina. This is an entry level to full performance technical position in the field of forensic science using appropriate protocols to conduct examinations of friction ridge evidence. The incumbent is responsible for applying the most current scientific methodology for friction ridge examination and utilizing field specific tools to assist with the process for analysis, comparison, evaluation and verification of all impressions. The incumbent may perform duties that involve the collection, examination, preparation, documentation, and/or analysis of latent fingerprints. The incumbent in this position is deemed "essential personnel" and is subject to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate. Displays knowledge of the protocols, methodologies, practices, equipment and materials for friction ridge analysis. Utilizes applicable scientific methodology to analyze, compare, evaluate, document, and preserve latent impression evidence related to law enforcement investigations. Performs examination of physical evidence utilizing laboratory equipment; upholds standard operating procedures, scientific principles and techniques to ensure the validity and integrity of evidence. Prepares documentation reflecting the analysis and conclusions of the examiner; prepares needed court exhibits; provides explanations of analysis procedures and renders conclusions in court as an expert witness. Displays knowledge of Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). Enforces federal, state, and local laws as necessary. Performs other duties as required. Bachelor's degree in forensic science, Criminal Justice, Biology, or a related science; or any equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience. Preference will be given to those candidates holding a bachelor's degree in a related field of science and two (2) years of experience in criminal identification and fingerprint classification/comparison work. Candidates already in possession of certification as a latent print examiner through the International Association for Identification will also be given preference. Must complete required training and be certified by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy as a Class 1 or Class 3 Law Enforcement Officer. Must possess a valid South Carolina Driver's License. This position will require an extensive background investigation, medical exam and drug screening. Must be in good physical health/condition. Minimum 21 years of age. Candidate selected for this position will be required to obtain certification as a laten print examiner through the International Association for Identification within two (2) years of becoming eligible to do so, and are required to maintain such certification as an ongoing condition of employment.
