General Description
The incumbent in this position acts as a positive role model to youth by demonstrating positive working relationships with peers, supervisors, volunteers and professionals. The Youth Intervention Aide works with staff, in recreation facilities, schools, and community spaces to deal with gang related issues and other conflicts that could lead to violence. The work is performed under the direct or indirect supervision of higher level staff. Employees may be required to work a variety of hours and shifts as demanded. Performs related work as required.
This is a Competitive Class position. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be given a provisional appointment and will be required to participate in the next Civil Service Examination for this title.
A qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until a Civil Service Examination is administered and an appropriate eligible list can be established to make a permanent appointment in accordance with the Civil Service Rule of Three. CITY RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE.
Typical Work Activities
- Visits schools, recreation centers, parks and special events to cultivate relationships with youth;
- Assists with counseling youth in understanding their situation, consequences of criminal behavior, and alternatives;
- Converses with youth, individually and in groups, who are at-risk or suspected of participating in criminal behavior in order to discourage criminal behavior and discuss alternatives, and positive opportunities;
- Initiates referrals of youth to various community-based services and opportunities;
- Communicates with Pathways and Recreation Management and Rochester City School District regarding youth; Writes reports regarding daily interventions and youth contacts;
- May visit homes of youth referred by police officers, probation officers, parents, schools, neighbors or other sources to assess home situation and parent and sibling relationships;
- Works with DRHS on resolving issues and conflicts that develop at City Recreation Facilities and Programs;
- Attends meetings regarding Rochester City School District, DRHS and other city department programs and community youth initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED PLUS two (2) years of experience providing direct services with at-risk youth in a school setting, community outreach, youth services programs, or counseling capacity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
An active New York State Class D Driver's License at time of application.
This license must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
