CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION


CLASSIFICATION TITLE: TRADES WORKER


PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform regular and semi-skilled work to maintain facilities and grounds in the City.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Ensures that construction, maintenance, and repair activities are in compliance with applicable laws, codes, regulations, and standards: conducts maintenance inspections of buildings, equipment, grounds, and facilities to identify potential problems, unsafe conditions, and needed repairs; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.

Performs various tasks involving general building maintenance or construction projects: paints interior/exterior surfaces; cuts, solders, and/or welds metal pipes or parts; removes, repairs, and replaces floor/ceiling tile; cleans gutters; removes, repairs and replaces roofing materials, etc.

Performs a variety of carpentry duties; constructs small buildings; builds and installs cabinets, etc.

Performs a variety of landscaping duties; mows grass; plants flowers and shrubs; weed eats around signs and fence lines; edges curb lines; clears leaves, tree limbs and other debris from park areas; spreads and hauls ground cover, dirt, or mulch; sprays weed killer and fertilizer; prunes trees and shrubs; weeds flower beds; spreads grass seed; grooms ball fields, etc.

Performs a skilled concrete finish work; builds forms and drain boxes; mixes concrete to proper consistency; pours and levels concrete, etc.

Assists with special projects and seasonal work; installs and removes holiday decorations; installs and removes banners; spreads salt on City streets as needed; clears streets and sidewalks of debris following special events; removes and replaces staging materials from sites as needed.

Determines amount of materials needed to complete projects and gathers equipment, tools, parts, and supplies; monitors inventory levels and initiates requests for new or replacement materials as required.

Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas: monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.

Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Prepares or completes various forms, reports, work orders, logs, accident reports, or other documents.

Receives various forms, reports, work orders, application instructions or other documents; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.

Operates a variety of varied purpose equipment and tools in road, right-of-way, landscape, and utility maintenance; operates a motor-grader, scraper, excavator, compactor, front-end loader, track hoe, back hoe, tractor/trailer and lowboy, street sweeper, ice spreader, chipper truck, leaf truck, milling machine, paving machine, commercial-grade lawn mower, weed eater, chain saw, blower, shovel, rakes, pitchfork, Maddox, pry bar or other equipment.

Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools, to complete essential functions to include the use of commercial-grade trucks and City vehicles.

Trades Worker assigned to the Convention Center performs the following additional duties:

Under the direction of Facility Engineer or Facilities Engineer Technician, Sr.:
Sets up equipment and electrical components for Convention/Trade Shows; installs microphones and sound equipment; monitors HVAC system, repairs and paints building surfaces, replaces HVAC filters, replaces bulbs, collects payments from vendors for electrical service.

Trades Worker assigned to Parks, Recreation, & Sports Tourism performs the following additional duties:

Performs difficult skilled work exclusively inspecting, installing, replacing, servicing, repairing and maintaining city parks and playgrounds, playground equipment and surfacing; does related work as required

Performs duties related to playground equipment safety and inspection, and provides related technical information and assistance to supervisors, equipment installation contractors and manufacturers, other park staff and the general public

Repairs, replace, inspects and performs other necessary actions to keep playground equipment in compliance with ASTM, CPSC and ADA regulations and manufacturers specifications. Coordinates the work of others in accomplishing these tasks

Ensures proper playground signage at all City playgrounds

Orders replacement parts, supplies and materials for routine repair and maintenance. Stocks work vehicle with tools and materials to allow for immediate repairs

Operates trucks, loaders, tractors, hand power equipment such as tillers and other equipment in connection with the above duties;

Serves as project lead when necessary

Assists with the playground replacement program including but not limited to:

  • Recommending plans for new playground based on safety, maintenance and design analysis and department guidelines
  • Communicating and coordinating with manufacturers and distributors on issues related to new and old equipment, orders, and warranties
  • Ensuring adherence to City purchasing guidelines

Responds to citizen inquiries and provides information on playground practices and methods

Supervises and participates in installing and repairing picnic tables, benches, bike racks, trash cans and other park equipment

Performs park and building construction work using a variety of journey level skills and tools

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Attends meetings, workshops and training as necessary.
Assists in preparing for and cleaning up after natural disasters as necessary.
Performs other related duties as required, requested or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; two (2) years of experience in maintenance and manual labor work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Trades Worker for Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism has the following requirements:

Must acquire the CPI (Certified Playground Inspector) certification within 6 months of hire. As a playground safety inspector, you will inspect playground equipment and play areas to identify potential risks and hazards. (For example, a swing-set in need of repairs or surface materials that are uneven or abrasive, which increases the likelihood that children may sustain cuts and scrapes.) Your duties and responsibilities revolve around ensuring that playgrounds and parks comply with all applicable safety guidelines.
