Nature of Work

This is responsible work providing field supervision to meter readers. Work involves reviewing work, assisting with problems, and training meter readers. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Meter Maintenance Supervisor. Provides guidance and direction to meter readers.

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.


  • Oversees, trains, and assists meter readers to effectively and efficiently read water consumption meters; issues tools and equipment needed for reading meters, assists in evaluating employee work performance.
  • Reviews and documents meter reading processes with regard to effectiveness and accuracy.
  • Trains personnel in proper safety procedures; assures all safety rules and requirements are followed.
  • Rereads meters to check the accuracy of earlier readings; explains error to meter reader.
  • Reads water consumption meters and enters data into hand-held computer; walks distances to meter locations in various weather conditions; locates and uncovers meters as necessary; Makes minor wire and touch pad repairs.
  • Restructures routes to read meters in sequence. Completes and maintains records; prepares reports related to work.
  • Reviews and verifies meter service requests; inspects meters and connections for any leaks, defects, irregularities, malfunctions, and/or unauthorized connections or open bypass connections.
  • Resolves public inquiries and complaints and sets scheduled appointments as necessary.
  • Inspects work of meter readers I & II
  • Responsible for consistently completing natural progression documents for meter reader I to II
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Training and Experience

Required Education and Experience


  • High school diploma or equivalent
-AND-
  • Three years of experience reading meters
-OR-
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience
Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license.
