CLASS SUMMARY:
This is the first of three levels in the Meter Reader series. Incumbents read and record readings of assigned gas and water meters. Responsibilities may include reporting inconsistencies, discrepancies, and/or dangerous situations.

Example of Duties

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES : (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
  • Reads and re-reads meters on an assigned route; records readings; investigates unusual readings.
  • Prepares a variety of operational records, reports, and/or work orders for follow-up, including inconsistencies, discrepancies, damaged, defective, or unlawfully connected meters, broken lids, and/or dangerous situations.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Typical Qualifications

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and a combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Licensing Requirements:
  • Driver's License.

Skill in:
  • Perform duties and make decisions independently;

  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, excessive walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to rain, snow, extreme temperatures, and other unfavorable weather, as well as rodents, snakes, spiders, and dogs. Incumbents may be subjected to electrical currents, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, and travel.
