Would the prospect of providing both equity in the marketplace and consumer protection through the testing of commercial measuring devices, inspections, and investigations be a rewarding career? If so, the Consumer Protection Specialist I position is the opportunity you have been seeking! Weights & Measures inspectors are part of a long established and respected field of public employees who are on the front-line providing accuracy and fairness in a myriad of businesses. Gas stations, retail stores, feed plants, mines, transfer stations, oil and propane delivery locations are just some of the types of businesses regulated by the section. This position conducts duties in the field and is stationed in Bennington County.



The successful applicant will have the opportunity to join a dynamic group of committed public service providers. This is an entry level position with room to advance in an established career ladder, based on acquired knowledge, skills, and abilities in the field of Weights & Measures.


You’ll conduct tests and inspections of commercial weighing and measuring devices including:
  • Retail Motor Fuel Dispensers (gas pumps)
  • Scales of all types and at varied locations
  • Retail scanning systems
  • VTM (vehicle oil) meters
  • LPG (propane) meters
  • Retail packages offered and exposed for sale.

The Specialist correctly applies the appropriate law and regulation to the inspection and documents the findings in a professional manner that meets the rigorous steps of due process. You may need to testify in formal hearings. Candidates will effectively communicate the findings of inspections and also engage in interactions with business representatives to gain compliance in difficult situations where there may be strong differences of opinion.



Other duties include assisting program Lead Inspectors with large capacity scale inspections as well as educating regulated entities on legal requirements as needed and may give informational presentations.



The Specialist will conduct a wide range of investigations on consumer complaints including but not limited to:
  • Short weight on packages
  • Short measure on firewood
  • Retail pricing accuracy
  • Fuel quality

Inspections must be completed using electronic means (laptop). Basic computer skills necessary for completing inspections, documents, and record keeping is required. Performs other related work as required. Work is performed under the general direction of the Weights & Measures Chief and Lead Program Inspectors. Extensive on the job training is provided for this position.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in the field in an assigned district, occasionally traveling statewide to assist in specialized inspection work with other specialists. Strong differences of opinion and emotional reactions may be encountered, and must be dealt with in a firm, but objective and helpful manner. Private means of transportation may be required. Overtime and evening work, including overnight stays, may be required. Hazards are present in testing gas and diesel pumps, oil meters, l.p. gas meters and heavy duty scales. Lifting of medium to heavy weights, gasoline test measures and other testing equipment is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree.



OR



Associate degree AND two (2) years of work in the areas of fuel delivery systems, retailing, calibration services, regulatory enforcement, engineering, or a physical science.



OR



Four (4) years of work in the areas of fuel delivery systems, retailing, calibration services, regulatory enforcement, engineering, or a physical science.
