BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under general supervision of the Program Manager, performs health education and outreach activities to encourage healthy behaviors that will help community members to restore, promote and maintain optimal health within program areas.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Must be capable of regular and predictable attendance at a specified location to perform assigned tasks.

· Deliver educational programs relative to public health and safety according to the goals and objectives of the program; identifies strategic partnerships with organizations and stakeholders that promote health education.

· Facilitates health education and training programs, including preparation, selection of educational materials/curricula, and follow-up activities.

· Presents health education programs on an individual and group basis.

· Provides school-based nutrition education such as the Iowa Department of Public Health’s Pick a Better Snack program to early education classrooms in local qualifying schools.

· Works with and provides health education to a diverse group of communities.

· Performs basic maintenance of the department garden and prepares fruits and vegetables for classroom presentations.

· Maintains current knowledge base on specific health issues, particularly in area of health education, health promotion, and community health.

· Provides community outreach to promote and strengthen liaison relationships.

· Assists in completing written progress reports on a periodic basis.

· Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

· Supervision is received from Program Manager or designee.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

· No functional and administrative supervision is exercised over support staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.

· Bachelor’s degree or diploma from an accredited community college or technical school preferred OR an associate degree and at least two (2) years of relevant work experience OR any equivalent combination of training, education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

· One year of experience in public health, healthcare, education, or social services required.

· Must be knowledgeable of community resources and healthcare provider network.

· Must be able to understand and explain child and adolescent growth and development.

· Must be knowledgeable of local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations as they apply to the program area.

· Must complete mandatory training for scope of role within first six months of employment and maintain required certifications.

· Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.

· Multilingual skills preferred.

· Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software applications.

· Ability to work independently and make sound decisions with limited supervision.

· Must be available for off-hour and/or weekend activities and overtime if needed.

· Must have a valid Iowa Driver's License and be insurable under county guidelines. The position may require the occasional use of private vehicle for official business.
