The Georgia Department of Revenue seeks to fill an Attorney 3 position within the Office of the General Counsel’s Tax Operations Team. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, you will be responsible for providing analysis and/or recommendations on legal issues relating to various types of state taxes that are within the scope and authority of the agency. Additionally, you will act as a liaison between the agency and the Department of Law.

Key duties include but are not limited to assisting the Deputy General Counsel in providing counsel to four legal groups within the Office of General Counsel. Specifically, these groups are the income tax group, the sales tax group, the external affairs tax group, and the Georgia tax tribunal group. Moreover, you will assist the Deputy General Counsel in providing counsel to certain internal client divisions, including Taxpayer Services, Compliance, and Local Government Services.


Entry Qualifications

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university AND license to practice law in the State of Georgia

~ OR eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one year of hire

~ OR reciprocity AND two years of relevant legal experience

~ OR two years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 2 (LEP021) state government only


Required Skills & Experience

  • Legal Writing Sample: Submission of a writing sample, not to exceed 10 pages, from a brief, memo, or other similar document. This must be attached to your profile/application.
  • Customer Service: Ability to provide professional legal services to agency divisions and executive leadership.
  • Teamwork & Cooperation: Ability to work collaboratively with project teams, both within the legal group and among business divisions.
  • Results Orientation: Ability to complete projects with limited supervision.
  • Judgment & Decision Making: Ability to weigh the needs of the agency to determine the best course of action for all parties.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to a variety of audiences.
  • Accountability: Ability to accept responsibility for one's actions with honesty and integrity, while remaining committed to organizational success.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Member in Good Standing with the State Bar of Georgia.
  • Familiarity with state government structure and operations.
  • Experience drafting regulations or memoranda, and/or reviewing state legislation.
  • Prior experience or education in sales tax, income tax, and/or any other state or local tax area is preferred.

Position Status & Pay Grade: Unclassified – Pay Grade M
Hiring Range: $51,310.72 - $81,000

Location: Department of Revenue Agency Headquarters 1800 Century Blvd NE, Atlanta GA 30345***This position will require reporting to the office in-person on a regular cadence.
