Duties and Responsibilities:
The Student Assistant will work with the Government Documents staff to complete a variety of tasks relating to processing new materials, weeding expired materials, and maintaining the overall collection in good order. These tasks include:
The Government Documents area is also maintained as a research area and quite study space for students within the library’s public services department, so the Student Assistant will also help with:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The Student Assistant will work with the Government Documents staff to complete a variety of tasks relating to processing new materials, weeding expired materials, and maintaining the overall collection in good order. These tasks include:
- Tracking incoming shipments of printed materials
- Checking shipping lists and labeling new items
- Shelving new items (books, magazines, pamphlets, maps, etc.) and re-shelving used items
- Shifting or moving items to other areas
- Typing lists and tables for inventory and weeding
- Assisting with special projects
- Completing other tasks and projects, as assigned
The Government Documents area is also maintained as a research area and quite study space for students within the library’s public services department, so the Student Assistant will also help with:
- Assisting library users with research, general, technical, and other questions.
- Conducting and recording hourly Floor Counts and Computer/Machine Usage Counts
- Checking tables for trash and left items, dusting shelves, and keeping the study areas neat.
- Cross-training in other public services units, as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Pay close attention to detail
- Put printed materials in order according to alphanumeric patterns
- Learn the Superintendent of Documents and the Library of Congress classification systems
- Print legibly
- Type and use Microsoft Word or Excel to create lists, labels, and tables
- Learn to use government catalogues and .gov websites to find information
- Follow directions, work independently, and complete tasks efficiently
- Communicate questions and concerns in a professional manner and respond well to feedback
- Maintain a calm composure when interacting with staff and students
- Lift boxes and books up to 30 lbs
- Knowledge or interest in government publications or legal research is a plus
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel
Available to work between the hours of 8 am – 6 pm Mon-Fri.
