The Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East (SLFPA-E) operates the regional flood control system and associated facilities in St. Bernard Parish, the east-bank of Orleans Parish, and the east-bank of Jefferson Parish within its control in order to protect lives and property from tidal flooding by natural weather events.
This vacancy is in our Facilities Maintenance Dept.
The Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority - East (SLFPA-E) operates the regional flood control system and associated facilities in St. Bernard Parish, the east-bank of Orleans Parish, and the east-bank of Jefferson Parish within its control in order to protect lives and property from tidal flooding by natural weather events.
The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Maintenance Regional Director, the Facilities Maintenance Manager A, the Maintenance Superintendent, Master HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic, the Electrician Specialist Leader and the Plumber/Pipefitter Master.
The incumbent will perform the following duties:
- 25% Assists by performing facility inspections and making repairs to buildings, grounds, outbuildings, street lighting, mechanical repairs to all operational equipment, such as a/c & heat systems, and any other items needed for daily operational use.
- 25% The incumbent will work with the a/c & heat system and perform the detailed daily routine of checking and making notes of all chillers, water towers, and air handler units. Including all pumps for chilled water and cooling tower water, checking gauges for proper pressures and temperatures for optimum operational use. Making notes for records and making any adjustments as needed. Performing monthly filter cleaning/changing and annual pm routines. Includes maintenance on ice makers and shop equipment.
- 15% The incumbent may provide plumbing services, including minor repairs, preventive maintenance, and quarterly inspections of flood control valves and completing valve maintenance inspection reports. Will exercise knowledge of plumbing code requirements, actuator operation to open and close valves, and use proper writing skills to document valve inspection.
- 15% The incumbent will work with the electrician department and assist in maintaining all equipment is in good working order, changing bulbs/ballasts, and troubleshooting and making the determination if it is safe to use. Will work on overhead lighting, street lighting, portable lighting (for emergencies), sea wall lighting, and crosswalk lighting. Must be trained to operate a forklift and man lift properly.
- 10% The incumbent will be able to perform general maintenance repairs such as changing door knobs, and broken glass repair, adjusting door closers, and repairs to file cabinets and desks. Must have some painting skills for small jobs and floor repairs and may assist with painting graffiti on the floodwalls.
- 5% Drive vehicles on and off the levee system as part of daily duties and will assist in flood fighting during emergency situations, including filling and stacking sandbags, loading and/or unloading trailers, and any other duties assigned during emergency situations.
- 5% The incumbent will keep records of facility routines/problems and report them to supervisors as soon as possible. The incumbent will perform any and all other duties as required or assigned by other higher-ranking supervisors, directors, or administrative personnel.
In emergencies during Mississippi River flooding and Hurricane/Tropical storm events, the incumbent will be on call and must report for duty if so required, and remain on duty in such situations until released from duty by the Appointing Authority.

Function of Work:
To assist a journeyman level tradesman and to learn the trade by on-the-job training or formal instruction as prescribed by the employing agency.

Close from a journeyman level tradesman or assigned instructor.

None.

May be used by all agencies; statewide.
Job Distinctions:
Differs from other entry or basic maintenance jobs by the performance of work directly subordinate to skilled tradesmen with the goal of preparing the incumbent for journeyman level status.
Differs from the journeyman level because it does not independently perform journeyman work in any trade.
Assists a journeyman level Trades Job in its assigned duties.
Performs limited skilled tasks under close direction of a journeyman in an on the job training program.
Participates in training as prescribed by an assigned journeyman or agency policy.
