Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary: This is skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of low and high pressure boilers, diesel generators, and mechanical systems in a power plant. Identifies and provides quality customer services, and helps to provide quality support services to Larned State Hospital, and Sexual Predator Treatment Program in pursuit of their mission. Work involves monitoring, operating, and maintaining all power plant related equipment, recording appropriate readings and information. Performs preventative and general maintenance on equipment and performs emergency repair or adjustments to maintain system integrity. May fill in for different shifts when co-workers are ill or on vacation etc. Adheres to all Hospital policies and KDHE regulations.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Maintenance
- Substitute and provide maintenance duties on chlorine pumps, water wells, boilers, and power plant-related equipment.
- Complete preventative maintenance on diesel generators, boilers, water wells, pumps, and softeners.
Operates and Repairs (2) High Pressure Steam Boilers and (6) Low Pressure Steam Boilers
Keeps power plant clean
- Fires Boilers on gas as needed.
- Monitors combustion control equipment.
- Completes boiler water tests.
Repair and Operate Emergency Diesel Generators, (2) 750 KVA, (1) 275 KVA, (1) 60 KVA, (2) 600KVA, and (2) 1000KVA
- Complete weekly generator tests under load.
- Test all batteries weekly.
- Put generators on line for weekly testing and in the event of power failure.
- Take generators off line for weekly testing and in the event of power failure.
Water Softeners, (4) Water Wells and Hot Water System
. Water Softeners
- Monitor water hardness using a hardness indicator with a hardness buffer.
- Regenerate softeners.
- Make brine.
- Test for chlorine residual using a chlorine indicator with DPD free chlorine residual pillows.
- Complete all KDHE records.
Hot Water System
- Monitor hot water temperature and pressure by observing temperature and pressure gauges.
- Change anodes.
Daily Activities
- Record pertinent power plant information on daily logs.
- Take messages when phones are forwarded from engineering office.
- Know procedures and contact appropriate staff in case of emergencies.
- Provide housekeeping duties as required.
Provide Services to Other Engineering Departments As Need Arises and Availability
- Assist in repairing/replacing faulty plumbing fixtures.
- Assist in repairing steam valve regulators, traps, and controls.
- Assist in cleaning sewer lines.
Qualifications
- Education:
Licensing & Certification: Valid Driver’s License with no restrictions.
Minimum Qualifications: Valid Driver’s License with no restrictions.
Preferred Qualifications: 2 years’ experience in power plant operation. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Will train selected applicant.
Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Ability to pass a KBI background and pre-employment drug test.
