The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff is currently recruiting for the Fingerprint Technician I classification in the Technical Services Division.
The recruitment process may be used to fill permanent part-time and/or full-time positions.
The ID section is responsible for completing fingerprint comparisons of all arrestees, decedents and registrants. The comparison results are then provided via documented identification confirmations to all submitting agencies within Contra Costa County. This position will physically encounter decedents in varying states of decomposition and can be extremely challenging for some.
As new laws and legislation are passed regarding the validity of forensic science fields of expertise, including fingerprint identifications, it is imperative that continued training is sought out. This is why the Office of the Sheriff Records & ID Unit prides itself on being a proponent for continuing education and will not hesitate to send employees to training opportunities as available.

- Confirming the identities of persons via fingerprints

- Properly studying for and passing the Fingerprint Academy

The eligible list established from this recruitment may remain in effect for six months.
License Required: Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator's license. Out of State valid motor vehicle operator's license will be accepted during the application process.
Education: Possession of a High School Diploma, GED Equivalency or a High School Proficiency Certificate and completion of 15 semester units, or 20 quarter units, from an accredited college or university which must include: a course in chemistry or biology (with laboratory section); and one course in Fingerprints or Evidence collection.
Substitution of Education: One (1) year of full-time, or its equivalent, of experience in a law enforcement agency in an assignment involving evidence handling or fingerprint comparisons will substitute for the Fingerprint or Evidence Collection course.
Other Requirements:
Sensory Requirement: Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities and differences between shade, degree or value of colors, shapes, sounds, forms, textures, or physical appearance associated with job-related objects, materials, tasks, or people.
Background:
A thorough background investigation will be conducted by the Office of the Sheriff. The applicant shall not have been convicted of a felony in this state, or in any other state, or federal jurisdiction. Any offense in any other state, or in any other federal jurisdiction, which would have been a felony if committed in this state will also result in automatic disqualification.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Completion of a law enforcement internship
- Completion of a bachelors degree or higher
- Experience in a public jurisdiction performing fingerprint identification
- Experience operating the automated 10-Print System (AFIS)
- Membership in related professional organizations
- Possession of certification as a 10-print examiner
Application Filing and Evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application, applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.
Fingerprint Technician Core Multiple Choice Assessment: Candidates who possess the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an online multiple choice assessment. The assessment will measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the Fingerprint Technician classification. These may include, but are not limited to: Analyzing and Interpreting Data, Using Technology, Attention to Detail, Handling Stress, Professional Integrity and Ethics, Legal and Regulatory Navigation, and Self-Management (weighted 70%)
- Virtual Interview: Candidates who achieve a passing score on the Fingerprint Technician Core Multiple Choice Assessment will be invited to participate in a virtual interview. The interview will measure candidates' competencies as they related to the Fingerprint Technician classification. These may include, but are not limited to: Professional and Technical Expertise, Informing, Building and Maintaining Relationships, and Leading Cross-Divisional Collaboration (weighted 30%)
The Virtual Interview will tentatively take place (remotely) the week of July 17th, 2023.
