Full Description
The Tippie College of Business is seeking an Executive Director of the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (Iowa JPEC) who will responsible for leading a portfolio of campus-wide and community-based entrepreneurial development programs, including oversight of the University’s Small Business Development Center and the Jacobson Institute for Youth Entrepreneurship as well as Iowa JPEC’s collaboration with the Tippie College of Business’ Institute for International Business. This role will lead efforts to expand innovative partnerships across the campus to grow and support an inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem at the University of Iowa to accelerate the development of innovative solutions to address society challenges. The Executive Director will also collaborate with key external partners to support the state of Iowa’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Additionally, the Executive Director is responsible for advancing the center via fundraising and building its national reputation by engaging in state, regional, and national organizations supporting entrepreneurship. This position will require regular local, regional, and national travel.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND SPECIFIC JOB TASKS
Strategic Planning
- Lead Iowa JPEC’s efforts to serve as the university’s hub for entrepreneurship education and campus-wide and community outreach programs.
- Work closely with the Iowa JPEC Advisory Council, Tippie College of Business leadership, and Entrepreneurship Academic Program Director on the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan.
- Provide strategic input in the development of a new campus facility that will serve as the future home for Iowa JPEC and other key Tippie College of Business programs and business resources.
- Assess all aspects of Iowa JPEC’s operational and strategic performance and provide recommendations on how to improve the collective impact of Iowa JPEC. Provide accurate and timely impact reports to stakeholders.
Financial Responsibility
- Work closely with the University of Iowa’s Center for Advancement to engage with alumni and secure private funding to support existing and new initiatives.
- Establish and manage Iowa JPEC’s operating budget including working with other program managers to ensure appropriate fund management across affiliated Centers and Institutes.
- Monitor UI Center for Advancement accounts to ensure proper use of funds and recognition.
- Ensure that grants are effectively managed, and that collection and disbursements of funds are managed per UI policies.
Leadership/Supervision
- Lead a team of professional staff who manage a portfolio of entrepreneurship training and support programs including:
- National Science Foundation I-Corps training program
- Venture School community-based training program
- Student-based Startup Incubator and summer accelerators
- Campus and statewide Venture Mentoring Service
- Multiple campus-wide new venture funding competitions
- Regional small business consulting services
- International entrepreneurship training and program development
- Multiple youth entrepreneurship initiatives
- Direct Iowa JPEC’s student co-curricular programming activities designed to further develop students’ entrepreneurial mindset and professional skills, successfully launch new entrepreneurial ventures, and connect students to internship and full-time employment opportunities with entrepreneurial ventures and innovative organizations.
- Connect with leaders at peer institutions to identify opportunities for new initiatives and partnerships.
- Provide functional and administrative supervision of staff including providing direction, assignments, feedback, and coaching to assure program outcomes are met.
- Ensure HR policies and procedures are followed.
- Ensure that processes are documented to streamline repeatability and that areas for improvement are captured and acted upon.
Public Relations
- Work closely with Tippie College of Business leadership, University of Iowa Center for Advancement staff, and the Iowa JPEC Advisory Council to secure private, corporate, and government grant support to fund expansion of Iowa JPEC programs and initiatives.
- Oversee Iowa JPEC marketing and communications activities including development and implementation of a comprehensive strategy to increase campus and community awareness of Iowa JPEC programs and enhance the national reputation of the Center. Includes website, printed materials, social media, advertising, and PR on a local, regional, and national level.
- Develop partnerships with regional, state, national, and international entrepreneurship and economic develop organizations to identify opportunities for collaboration, serve on committees, and enhance Iowa JPEC’s overall standing and rankings in the professional and academic communities.
- Collaborate with other University of Iowa innovation and economic development organizations to maximize the university’s collective economic development impact.
- Lead the Iowa JPEC Advisory Council to obtain input and counsel on the mission, vision, strategic goals, and outcomes of entrepreneurship programming offered through the Center.
Supervision Received
- Reports to the Dean of the Tippie College of Business.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education Requirement
- Master’s Degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Qualifications
- Typically, 5 or more years in a leadership role of a comprehensive university entrepreneurship center or technology based new venture acceleration program or significant experience leading advanced technology or high growth entrepreneurial ventures.
- Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and evaluating an organization's strategic vision in a highly complex college or division.
- Demonstrated experience planning and directing the administrative and operational activities of a program or service to reach comprehensive goals. Advised and made recommendations on program goals and internal and external trends.
- Demonstrated experience managing financial oversight of a program or service and proven track record of external fundraising.
- Experience serving on various internal and external committees, commissions, agencies, and/or associations. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement and business development strategy for advancing center goals.
- Expert proficiency in collaborating and embracing diversity, working with a variety of individuals and groups to foster respectful communication, learning and spirit of cooperation.
- Current valid driver’s license and ability to meet the UI Fleet Safety Driving Policy.
- Ability to travel, sometimes overnight, up to 25% of the time each year.
Desired Qualifications
- 10 or more years of experience in a leadership role.
- Entrepreneurial experience including founding/co-founding a company.
- Well-developed network in the entrepreneurship and venture financing space.
- Knowledge of University Policies and Procedures.
