Full Description
The City of Topeka is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Engineering Technician I or II depending on qualifications to join our Utilities team! The Engineering Technician works in the area of construction inspection, construction surveying, interpretation of plans and specifications, and documentation of construction activities for utility infrastructure. This position will also assist in determining the scope of work for repairs and oversees work being performed.
What will you do?
- Inspect utility construction, renovation and repair work for quality, materials and workmanship to ensure that all work complies with specifications, ordinances, City standards and contract documents.
- Coordinate, schedule and communicate repairs with accurate information to parties involved including the public.
- Prepare and maintain construction progress reports. Notifies Utility Repair and Inspection Manager of discrepancies and may temporarily suspend contractor’s operation with sufficient cause with regards to the safety of construction personnel and the general public.
- Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, maps, legal descriptions and drawings.

Minimum qualifications: For both positions you must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and fall within the city insurable driving guidelines, must have Kansas driver’s license within six (6) months of hire date.
ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN I (right click to open in new tab)- GRADE K14, STEP 1 - $17.84/hour
- Requires High School Diploma or equivalent and one year of experience in construction and inspection field, or one year of high school level training in the Engineering field. Additional certifications maybe required within one year of employment.
ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN II (right click to open in new tab) - GRADE K19, STEP 1 - $20.69/hour
- Requires High School Diploma or equivalent and three years of related experience with one year as an Engineer Technician I preferred. Preferred graduation from an accredited technical school program or an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in the field of Civil Technology. Work Zone Safety of Traffic Control Management equivalent or able to obtain within 1 year of employment.
