Public Works Cemetery Grounds Assistant/Sexton Trainee
The City of Bangor Public Works Department is seeking a trainee for our Cemetery Sexton position. The trainee will learn City of Bangor cemetery management practices under the direction of our current Cemetery Sexton. The City of Bangor Public Works Department provides extensive infrastructure support to the residents of Bangor. This work includes care and management of 4 public cemeteries within City limits: Maple Grove Cemetery, Oak Grove Cemetery, Pine Grove Cemetery, and the City-owned portion of Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Required knowledge and experience include:
Ability to effectively read, comprehend, and write in English language using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and perform mathematical calculations.
Two years applicable experience in positive end-user interactions, comparable level of responsibility, equipment operations, and experience with professional communication via electronic medium.A combination of experiences that meet the total two-year requirement may be acceptable
Must know, or have ability to develop a working knowledge of, regulations and practices relating to cemetery management
Ability to create and maintain accurate electronic cemetery records
Demonstrated ability to use office administration computer programs such as MS Access, MS Outlook, and MS Word
Familiarity with, or ability to learn, the City of Bangor ARC GIS system and asset management software
Ability to conduct professional communications via phone and online meetings e.g. Zoom, Teams, etc.
Thorough knowledge of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers including appropriate application procedures and uses and the potential hazards they may pose to employees, the general public, animals, and the environment
Candidate must earn State of Maine Pesticide Applicator license within 3 months, Master Applicator license within 1 year
Skill in operating a wide variety of light to heavy power equipment
Ability to effectively communicate with members of the general public in a courteous, calm, pleasant, tactful manner during situations involving persons experiencing family illness and grief associated with death; generally, conduct positive interpersonal interactions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.
Thorough knowledge of all applicable safety and environmental rules and regulations and ability to apply such knowledge to daily operations
General working knowledge of budgeting principles and procedures
Weekend burial responsibilities may be required
Ability to be on 24-hour call in emergencies.

The benefits package includes:
- Trainee compensation pay range is $20.73/hr. – $27.85/hr. plus applicable stipends. Starting pay depends on verifiable equipment experience. Potential for annual increases based on merit (up to 5%) AND yearly adjustments based on citywide COLA allowances
- The current Cemetery Sexton Pay range is $23.47/hr. - $31.52/hr. plus applicable stipends
- Paid vacation days – up to 2 weeks in the first year
- Comp Time – Overtime can be converted to comp time for up to 80 additional hours paid time off
- Paid Holidays – 13 paid holidays/year
- Sick days – up to 15 paid sick days/year
- Bonus Days – can earn two bonus days off each year if you bank your sick time instead of using it
- Nine percent (9%) City retirement contribution

- Paid Long Term Disability coverage
- We supply your tools, equipment, and Personal Protective Equipment with a generous boot allowance, and 75% of uniform costs are covered by the City
- 4-day workweek in the summer, 6:00 am – 4:30 pm. Three day weekends every week!
- Monday through Friday work schedule, 6:30 am – 3:00 pm, so you can enjoy much of your afternoon off!
