PROGRAM: The fulltime & part-time members of the VT Youth Development Corps AmeriCorps State Program (VYDC) implement diverse youth initiatives, fostering positive development & building resilience to help youth avoid opioid misuse & other unhealthy behaviors, transcend the effects of COVID-19, and the gain academic, social, & job skills needed to thrive. Website: VermontYouthAmeriCorps.org SITE: Common Roots connects farmers, educators, youth, and community members to build a sustainable future through food and land stewardship education. By collectively growing food for our programs and food shelves, we celebrate the soil and soul of community. Our regenerative farming practices provide food and soil security nurturing our common roots. Programs include the Farmstand Program, Food Shelf Program; Farm to School Program; Farm to Go Afterschool Program; Gathering on the Land Program, Fieldtrips, and Land Stewardship. COVID-19: During pandemic, as families were struggling, we went from serving 120 families to more than 500 families. We will continue to increase food production to be able to serve more families and individuals. Location: South Burlington, VT
Member Duties : VYDC-Common Roots Education AmeriCorps Member Develops curricula and teaches families and seniors who participate in the Food Shelf about growing and preparing food; tending to the Growing Gardens, Growing Kids section of the farm & Abenaki farm field for the food shelf. This increases knowledge about growing and preparing farm fresh food; Learning about the Abenaki Land Link project and growing heritage food for the Abenaki Food Shelf in the next town over (Shelburne, VT). Support healthy food preparations with summer campers. This Member position will assist at the South Burlington Food Shelf. Travel: Reliable private transportation to get to farm. Minimum age 17, with parent/guardian permission. Send cover letter, resume, and contact information for 2 references. Must pass National Service Criminal History Check.
