Psychiatric Caseworkers monitor the treatment and progress of mentally ill clients, perform case management activities, and coordinate discharge and aftercare services, in an outpatient, home and community-based setting. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

There is an emphasis on utilizing the recovery model, formulating individualized treatment plans that leads to self-sufficiency.
These positions require crises intervention techniques, documenting client progress, assessing client needs and resources available; case management practices and procedures; laws governing abuse and neglect of clients; care planning and implementation; and educating clients and their families on issues of daily living, coping skills and employment.
