Definition of Class
- This is an internship/entry level professional position (per-diem with up to 20 hours a week) responsible for
- implementing Erie County Data Center (ECDC) research activities including but not limited to data collection,
- data cleaning, data analysis, report writing, presentation and dissemination of results. This position requires
- mature individual who is able to carry out basic and secondary research activities related to economic
- development and community planning individually, as well as collaboratively as part of a team. Supervision is
- received from the Data Center and GIS Administrator.

- The Erie County Department of Planning and Community Development is a dynamic and creative team
- committed to improving the quality of life for the residents of Erie County through its programs and services.
- The department serves the community in a variety of program areas including; community development block
- grants, municipal assistance, recycling, transportation, coastal and water resources, greenways, grant writing,
- the Erie County Data Center and GIS. Planning and Community Development
- team members are challenged to develop and deploy innovative solutions to community development in Erie
- County.
Duties & Responsibilities
- The Erie County Data Center research assistant will carry out activities and initiatives within the scope of the data center. Specifically, this position will work closely with Data Center Administrator and GIS team to create reports and presentations for the external Data Center partners and local policy makers to support data driven decisions for public and private investments in the region. The successful candidate must possess data analytical skills and ability to synthesize information from various datasets and databases, as well as to have ability to collect primary data on as needed bases. In addition, solid writing, communication, and presentation skills are necessary in order for the candidate to be successful in this position. The research assistant will be working with the following online platforms: EMSI, Implan, Census Database, and Tableau and will be updating the content for a couple of websites.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- High level technical competence with Microsoft software
- Basic knowledge and experience with data analysis and management (DBF, spreadsheets, Access databases, geodatabases)
- Basic knowledge and experience utilizing software for statistics and data analysis (Excel, STATA, SPSS, SAS, R, etc.)
- Basic knowledge and experience utilizing data visualization tool Tableau for analysis and data visualization
- Basic knowledge and experience working with EMSI, Implan, and Census Database
- Basing knowledge and experience with website content updates
- Basic knowledge of research methodology (statistical and mathematical techniques)
- Ability to extract, organize, analyze, and present data, and express ideas clearly and concisely in oral, written and graphic form
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, staff of other agencies, public officials and the general public; good judgment and initiative
Minimum Requirements
- Working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in economics, business intelligence, GIS or a related field.
