The City of Deming is seeking qualified applicants for a Customer Service/ Meter Reader

position. With minimal supervision, this position preforms routine manual and clerical

work in reading and repairing water and gas meters and recording the readings.

The main responsibility in this work is for the accurate reading and recording of water and

gas consumption of utility customers and to maintain the meters in workable and accurate

condition. Work includes keeping records according to established forms so that billings

and needed repairs can be made properly. Ordinarily employees follow designated routes,

receiving specific work instructions and referring unusual questions to a superior for

decision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Any one position may not include all of the duties

listed, nor do the examples cover all duties which may be performed.)

• Reads water and gas meters on an assigned route and records findings; makes

special readings as required.

• Checks to see that meters are functioning properly and perform repair work as

required.

• Walks or drives truck over established route and takes readings of meter dials.

• Inspects meters and connections for defects, damage, and unauthorized

connections.

• Indicates irregularities on forms for necessary action by servicing department.

• Verifies readings to locate abnormal consumption and records reasons for

fluctuations.

• Turns service off for nonpayment of charges in vacant premises, or on for new

occupants.

• Returns route book to business office for billing purposes.
