PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
Mechanic’s Helper
The City of South Portland is seeking a Mechanic’s Helper I to join our Public Works maintenance team. The selected candidate will work in our new state-of-the-art Municipal Services Facility under the general supervision of the Garage Maintenance Supervisor, Public Works Superintendent and Public Works Director.
The Mechanic’s Helper will assist the mechanic team in the maintenance, overhaul and repair of cars, trucks and heavy equipment. Will perform oil changes, grease jobs, tire changes, light replacement, minor body work, etc. or other preventive maintenance tasks which require minor mechanical skills and/or experience. Also performs various cleaning, organizational and general maintenance duties on equipment and facilities.
Education: High school graduate or equivalent. Participation in, or graduation from, a vocational or Community College in an associated program.
Experience: Must have some demonstrated professional skill area in expected job duties or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have and maintain a sufficiently clean driver’s license in order to be able to move equipment and other duties. Position will be required to be a part of the City’s required random drug screen pool. Must obtain State of Maine Class B licensure within one year of hire. Must obtain A, D, E, and T inspection licenses within one year of hire. Must have own set of basic hand tools to perform the associated work.

Effective July 1, 2023 starting pay is $22.48. Annual wage increases are subject to the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
