Full Description

Under general supervision, performs skilled routine and general maintenance to diesel and gas powered automotive and fire suppression equipment, such as bulldozers, trucks, tractors, and miscellaneous equipment. Conducts diagnostic testing and identifies problems to determine vehicle and equipment malfunctions; repairs vehicles and heavy equipment.

Performs skilled routine and general maintenance to diesel and gas powered automotive and fire suppression equipment, such as trucks, tractors, and miscellaneous equipment. Conducts diagnostic testing and identifies problems to determine vehicle and equipment malfunctions, services brake systems, replaces wheel seals, rotates tires, changes undercarriage parts on bulldozers, replaces bed boards on low boy trailers/transport trucks, and other miscellaneous duties. Repairs vehicles and heavy equipment in the repair shop and during service calls. Performs welding activities. Transports fire control equipment. Performs administrative duties associated with shop operations such as completing work orders, purchasing supplies and parts, and maintaining stock records.

A high school diploma and two years of work experience directly related to the area of employment to include automotive and equipment repair, diesel engines, heavy equipment and light duty vehicles. Welding experience is required. Position requires a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Must have Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) prior to employment. Must complete CDL Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) Theory training within 15 working days of hire then obtain a Commercial Driver's License within 90 working days.

Works outside/inside exposed to extreme heat and inclement weather conditions. Respond to service calls after hours and on weekends. Overnight travel may be required for large fire incidents in the state that require a mechanic on duty. Out-of-state travel may be required for Southeastern fire incidents. Must be able to lift, walk, squat, climb and carry objects up to 50 lbs. This position requires the employee to be subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace-CDL Drug and Alcohol Testing. This position works in the Coastal Region which consists of Aiken, Barnwell, Bamberg, Orangeburg, Calhoun, Allendale, Hampton, Colleton, Dorchester, Berkeley, Charleston, Jasper, and Beaufort Counties.
