Job Description
Under the general supervision of the Parks Operations Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, performs grounds maintenance activities of City owned facilities and property including but not limited to parks, golf course, cemeteries, and right-of-way.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
~ Mows, treats and seeds grass areas; fertilizes and sprays; applies pesticides/fertilizers.
~ Performs all types of Parks maintenance duties, including golf course work; aerification of greens, tees, fairways, bunker maintenance and irrigation system operation and repairs.
~ Prepares course and amenities for golf tournaments
~ Removes dead trees and tree branches; trims shrubs, trees and bushes.
~ Waters plants and grounds; weeds plant beds; identifies and corrects plant deficiencies; prepares and installs new plantings; and treats and conditions soil and plants.
~ Repairs minor damage to buildings and facilities due to storms or vandalism and corrects hazardous conditions; reports major damage to supervisor.
~ Cleans swimming pool, tennis courts and related facilities; inspects for defects, damage and hazardous conditions.
~ Maintains ball fields, conditions infields, marks athletic fields, and repairs fencing.
~ Operates tractors, mini backhoe, skid loader, mowers, aerial lift truck, dump trucks, snowplows, sweepers, motorized carts, snow blowers, concrete mixer, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, chain saws and similar equipment.
~ Performs all types of cemetery work including opening and closings of graves, disinterments, and pours concrete foundations.
~ Assists in inspection of monument company"s work.
~ Removal of trash/debris from assigned areas and performs janitorial duties as needed.
~ Assist with snow removal operations from City property and street right-of-way.
~ May work nights, evenings or weekends when inclement weather, emergencies, or other situations require working these hours; will be available to respond in emergencies or unusual situations outside of the normally assigned work period.
~ Performs job functions adhering to safety guidelines and policies set by administration and/or supervisor.
~ Demonstrates basic computer skills.
~ Performs other duties as required; helps personnel in other divisions or other City Departments.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and Professional Certification: Requires a high school diploma, GED or equivalent. Knowledge of grounds keeping, grass and plant care, tree identification and care, and athletic field maintenance and preparation. Knowledge of operation and routine care and maintenance of powered grounds maintenance equipment, tools and safety practices; and potential operating hazards and of applicable safety precautions.
General knowledge of light construction including basic carpentry, concrete flatwork and masonry, plumbing and minor repair methods, facilities maintenance, and proper handling and application of hazardous chemicals. Ability to perform moderately heavy work for extended periods of time and lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
Skill to adjust to changing situations, priorities and deadlines while maintaining efficiency and effectiveness; ability to make minor adjustments and repairs on equipment used; and ability to perform moderately heavy work for extended periods of time.
Possession of a valid Iowa Certified Pesticide Applicators category 3T or 3OT or ability to obtain said certification within 3 months of employment. Ability to obtain category 6 License within 6 months of employment.
Minimum Job Related Experience: Requires minimum two years of experience in landscaping, construction, operation of equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Human Relations: Ability to establish and to maintain an effective working relationship with supervisor, subordinates, state, county and municipal elected officials, employees at all levels within the organization and members of the community; ability to interact constructively with the general public; and ability to understand and follow both written and oral instructions.
Working Conditions: Regularly exposed to all kinds of weather conditions, including rain, snow, heat, cold, humidity, dust, and wind; regularly operates equipment with varying degrees of noise and vibration.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to kneel, squat, and climb ladder to perform various repair work. Must be able to step up 18 inches into employer"s equipment using 3-point contact for safety. Work regularly involves climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and handling. Must be able to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand and able to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. Must have visual acuity and depth perception and be able to distinguish essential color on a regular basis. Must be able to perform inside and outside work during day and night hours; requires occasional overtime.
Additional Requirements: Must be physically capable of operating the vehicle safely. Requires possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver"s License (CDL) with air brakes and is subject to the Iowa Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing program within 6 months of employment. Ability to obtain certified pool operator (CPO) license within 6 months of employment.
