Job Summary


The City of Salem is looking for a Geographic Information System (GIS) Technician to be a part of the Public Works Operations Division, Technical Services Section. We are looking for individuals with entry level GIS experience. This is a great opportunity to begin your GIS career!

What you will do:
At the City of Salem, GIS Technicians ensure data from engineering drawings and plans are digitized correctly in the City’s GIS enterprise system. This position will focus on water utility data and will also serve in the Public Works UAS program as UAV pilots. This exciting position will help refine and support a GIS based asset management system (Cityworks) as well as support data collection, web GIS applications, and minor analysis. What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check.
  • Must have an Oregon Driver license and meet the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • Bachelor's degree in geography, planning, engineering, business, computer technology or related course of study; and one year GIS software application experience which includes designing, creating, maintaining and analyzing geospatial and tabular data; and writing GIS script or applications programming, or any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • Must pass the FAA Part 107 exam within 6 months from date of hire and maintain certification during employment.
  • Must meet CJIS (Criminal Justice Information System) registration and requirements within 6 months of hire.
